Airbox timline for the 550
« on: June 06, 2009, 03:05:02 PM »
does anybody know what airboxes work with what years?
Is it only based on the type of carbs you have?
I ask because i have a 76 550 with 78 carbs. so do i need an airbox from a 76 or a 78

I think you'll want the intake rubbers/carb insulators from the 77/78K which are shorter than the 76, and the 4 airbox rubbers from the 77/78K which are longer, then you can use either airbox.

Starting at the back, you have the filter box, then the air plenum, carb couplers, carbs, more carb couplers and the manifolds.

Honda stocked the air plenum, along with the couplers as an assembly for the 550.  They were not separate items.  All components between the filter box and the head are associated with the carb type and "different" between the card types.  The PD carbs have a different length, inlet diameter and exit diameter,  They also have a different center bore spacing.  To accommodate the carb change the manifolds, both couplers, and (I think) the air plenum mold were altered.

The filter boxes appear to be the same for all 550s, but different from the 500's, as that did not have the engine breather element in the base of it.
