Do I have a bent center stand or some other problem?
« on: June 08, 2009, 12:24:56 PM »
When my bike is on the center stand it seems to lean to the starboard side. (when looking from the back it leans to the right)
Do I have a bent center stand or could it be something else?

Here are pics:

BTW: Sidestand is extended but not touching ground, just fyi.

Does it track poorly? Do you feel it pull to one side or the other?

Not really that I notice. But then again I've only put about 150 miles on it since buying it last fall and really haven't ridden since I was a sophomore (1981) in high school. Maybe I'm chalking up bad behavior on the bikes part to my lack of riding skills?

I have never really examined it, but aren't the feet on the center stand tubes?  Maybe one of them is crushed a bit and changing the foot height?

Wierd, the front end looks vertical while the rear end leans.
If you look down the longitudinal centerline from underneath, do the front and rear wheels line up?
And are they parallel to one another?
I see more engine on one side than the other from the front.
It looks like your neck tube is tweeked to the side?
Measure your center stand shaft at each end to some horizontal feature above or below the shaft
and see if it is "square to the world" (that the dimension is the same, at each end, indicating squareness)
Sure looks like something is tweeked pretty good.

Good call Tiny, didn't think of that.
Looks like there's more going on than the center stand though...

I should also add that even though the bike shows signs of being dropped on both sides, (minor scuffing to turn signals, mirror arms, points cover, etc.) the frame itself shows no signs of outright damage and most of the bolts on the bike still have the factory yellow markings.

The centre stand looks to be too narrow, maybe it got squashed at some stage in a drop, if I was going to do anything it would be to drop the centre stand off and get it measured as this is the cheapest of all options.
If it;s a frame twist then you are in big trouble.
Oh yeah and check out the second photo, does he need a rear wheel alignment, looks a bit too much to the left or is that optical illusion?
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I had the same problem with my KO when I first got it.  Turned out the center stand had 1 leg spread out.  I think the PO did that to accomodate an aftermarket 4 into 2 exhaust.  I found a used one on eBay, primed and painted it and it sits good now.  Take a measurement between the lower legs of the stand and post it.  Then someone with that bike can measure his and let you know if there is a difference.

I gotta 2nd this. It looks like the the motor is over a bit, but maybe the front end is turned slightly so it could be an illusion? But the rear wheel definantly looks off. Are the adjusters set at the same distance on the swing arm? Thats a really nice bike & would really suck if the frame is tweeked.

Also when you look at the pic of the rear, the shocks look like they lean in the same direction?

My K2 leans the same way (and almost the same amount) but I have never noticed any handling problems and it had factory exhaust when I got it.  I just thought they all did that  ??? ??? ??? ???

You know though, its not so much the lean of the bike on the stand. The rear tire itself looks strange to me?

Thanks for the replys so far guys. I have some new tires on order and when I take the bike in, I'll have them look at it. BTW, the rear tire is a 130x18 which is two sizes higher than stock so maybe thats contributing to it not looking right? I'm replacing it with a 120x18 instead of the stock 110.

Anybody thought of this one yet?

Swing arm bushings. To me it looks pretty clear to be in the back tire/swing arm area alone. If you look at the winkers in the rear they are parallel to the ground, however the shocks are not 90 degrees to them. The shocks and the tire are parallel to each other.

Also I have to agree that the center stand looks a little bit narrow. Measure it up and come back with results, we should be able to get a better idea if we can cross it off the list of potentials.
