550F header on a 500
« on: January 01, 2011, 05:22:01 AM »
I have a 550F header and Mac Muffler that I was planning on using on my CB500. The original plans were to change the pegs to CB400 rear sets, 550F kicker and CB400 bars.

I'm thinking about waiting a bit before doing all that but I'd still like to install the 550F header. I think I read something on here about the 550F header interfering with the 500 foot pegs. What is it about that? Is it just the kicker? I have the 550F kicker.
Are the 550F foot pegs different than the 500 pegs?

The brake pedal is significantly different on the CB550F, to reach "over and around" the exhaust collector.  The frame, peg mounts and kicker are all different between the CB500 and the CB550F.  If you have sufficient skills at fabrication, you could probably make it work, but it is NOT a direct bolt-on.

So my best bet may be to just wait until I install the 400F rear sets, huh? Or do you think even that will give me the clearance I need?

You say the frame is different? It's not as simple as getting 550F pegs and lever for that right side to clear the exhaust?

The 550F brake pedal is key to making the whole setup work, and the 550F frame uses a much longer tube for the pedal shaft, to move the pedal outboard significantly as compared to the CB500 setup.  You might be able to splice on an additional length of tube onto the frame  but then it might foul with the CB400F peg mount.  The CB550F right side peg mount is entirely different, and bolts to its own dedicated stud on the frame, rather than using the lower engine mount bolt as in the CB500 and CB400F

Can someone with a 550F take pics of the right side pedal/peg arrangement? Without actually taking the 500 apart and trying this, I still can't decide if I can make it work or not.

With the stock 500 pegs, I'm sure it's a No-Go. But I'm wondering if the 400F pegs and 550F kicker will be a little more forgiving. Some pics of the 550F right side mounts might be helpful to me.
