Aprilia you can't what???
« on: June 09, 2009, 03:56:54 AM »
OK check this out, guy imported this lovely Aprilia 250cc into New Zealand.
Apparently he needs a certificate from the Aprilia factory to get it made road legal, this appears to be mission impossible!
Shame as I wouldn't mind the bike myself. ;D
Where is Aprilia made?

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I'll second that. Buddy had one and it scared me right off.

i would LOVE to have a feather weight, water cooled, 250cc, 2 stroke street bike. that would be such a kick ass ride. i can only find them ebay tho, and they're never for a price anywhere close to what i can afford. maybe i'll move to england some day where they're dirt cheap ;D lol

Where I live in New York State the legal road limit is 50cc for a two-stroke. I saw one, another Aprilia, at the dealer. It was pretty nice, but very small. An interesting bike.
I liked the Pegaso too. I don't know if they make them any more.

I guess he'll have to take his 250 to the track.

Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

That's odd...I had an Honda NSR250 on the road in NY perfectly legally(no title funny stuff) and a Derbi GPR50R (50cc but highway legal) and a Derbi GPR125R as well for a short period of time. All two strokes and all completely 100 percent legal on the road. The only one I had to fight about was the GPR50R because they said it should be a moped, but the Certificate of Origin said Motorcycle so that saved me on that one. Maybe Buffalo is different than the Albany area? But i'd be surprised. I've seen a few Aprilia RS250's for sale in the NY and the Northeast that had titles somehow but yeah people want a ton of money for them and they are usually thrashed.

Now a Yamaha RZ500...that's where the fun is...try finding one of those for a decent price...

Maybe they meant you can't get a road legal 250 two stroke in the US new? You can get the Cup Challenge version or whatever but it's track only. Any newer larger displacement two strokes they don't sell in the US (officially) so that must be what they were referring to? The DMV doesn't know whether a bike is two or four stroke just how many cylinders it is...so they won't care what type of motor. The tricky matter is having a legit title for a newer imported two stroke.

i beleive from around 1998 the u.s. banned all 2 stroke  vehicles for on road use! :( thats not an exact date. even scooters and mopeds. i know a lot of people in socal that still ride thier old 2 stroke bikes.  hell they want all 2 strokes out of california even offroad.  :o  hopefully i can restore my old yamaha dt250 before they wont let me register it too.

That can't be right...you can buy a brand new two stroke Aprilia moped among other to use on the road legally, just not the highway.

My GRP50R was a highway legal motorcycle and a 2003 model. Sold legally in the US as a motorcycle. The Aprilia RS50 was also sold legally up until a couple years ago in the US as a motorcycle for highway use. Same goes for my 2005 GPR125R I owned for an short stint. That was a 125cc two stroke.

See I always thought that sales were banned from the highway, but not public roads. Until recently when all the chinese scooter companies started making 4-strokes did  I realize that now ALL 2-stroke road use vehicles are banned from being sold.

At least here in IL.
