Topic: Still confused about tire sizes. Avon Roadriders.

CB550k Stock rims.  Gling for a modern looking tire: the Avon Roadrider.  I searched and read all I could but am still confused.  What would really ease my confusion are pictures of tires on stock rims (preferably Roadriders).

I think I know the stock sizes are 3.25" front, 4" rear.  However, the front tire I just took off says 100/90-19 but also says (3.25/3.5-19).  How is 3.25" equal to 100mm and not 82.55mm?   Big difference.  Rear tire was 120/90-18 which kinda looked too big and apparently is according to some posters here.  I wil be ordering my Roadriders in metric sizes and want a good fitment (without the problems TwoTired explained in many threads) and also good looks.  Ideally I would like a set of tires just slightly bigger than stock, but not by much at all.  What metric sizes would those be?  110/90 rears and 100/90 fronts?

I know this subject has been discussed ad nauseum but bear with me.  If you have some pictures of Avon Roadriders on stock 1.85" rims, please post them I would love to see them.  Thanks.

I think 90/90 and 110/90 could be quite close.

90/90 Avon is almost identical width, but 17mm shorter overall diameter than 3.25" (stock) Avon.

110/90 Avon is identical width but 8mm shorter overall diamter than 4" (stock) Avon.


Basically those are the same tires as stock just a little shorter.  I saw a bike or two with 100's up front.  100/90 Avon is 11mm wider than 3.25" (stock) Avon, but 7mm taller diameter.  Would I want to go taller and wider for rear tire, or shorter and same width?  Pictures would be great.

Great thanks.  I was sitting here before wondering why not just go with stock sizes 3.25-19 and 4.00-18.

This pictures shows a member's bike with 3.25 fronts and 110/90-18 rears, the rears being identical in width, just 8mm shorter (I have been studying the Avon spec sheet ) It looks good but maybe could use that extra 8mm if its even noticeable.

I am interested in this too, I am buying the road riders and want to the know the fattest size i can get on stock cb550 rims.

From what I have read, the fattest you COULD get on does not mean the fattest you SHOULD put on.  TwoTired explains that 120's will fit on the 1.85" rear rim but are not meant to and will wear oddly, giving bad handling after enough miles.  Apparently 110's are acceptable and more than edequate.

I would like to see more pictures of 3.25's front and 4.00 or 110/90 rears on cafe style bikes without fenders.

ahhhhg I am debating on the spitfires and the road runners and i cant decide i like the tread of the road runner but i like the price and of the spitfire. I have had nothing but good experiences with avons on my harleys
