thank you Mythbusters!
« on: June 09, 2009, 08:31:12 PM »
on an episode a few years ago, they tested different methods to see which was the fastest way to get beer cold. among those methods were : burying the beer in sand, soaking said sand with gasoline and lighting it (like THAT would work) spraying the 6 pack with a co2 fire extinguisher (worked but at 25 dollars for a charge way too expensive) and one of the more practical ones that actually worked, was putting the beers into an ice/water bath with some salt in the water. the ice and water alone also worked good BUT the salt apparently lowers the temperature that the water freezes making the ice/water bath colder with salt than without. well, i got home this evening from an 8 hour round trip to atlanta this evening craving a few ice cold beers. lo and behold, i hadnt put any of the fresh case in the fridge. i remembered the ice/water/salt thingy and damned if it didnt get the room temperature beer down to 37 degrees in 4 minutes! i was just so damned happy about the icy cold beer that happened so fast i felt the need to share it with a group of folks that i knew would appreciate it. i told my wife about it and i was all excited, her response was, why the #$%* would i care about that? why did you waste the salt damnit! and you folks wonder why i want to get as far away from columbia as i can rotflmfao!

That's an awesome trick. I've heard about it, but never tried it. I have to try it now

We would make ice cream when I was a kid.  I would be the one who had to crank it, no electric one for us.  Ice cream is put in a bath of ice and rock salt.  The salt melts the ice, but doesn't raise the temp, so the water is below freezing point.  And being a liquid, it has a much greater contact area.  My Dad would throw a room temp watermelon in the mix, and would be icy in 10 minutes, all the way through.  A can of soda takes about 3 minutes.

Does the tubing need ventilation from both ends?  Or does the vacuum do the work?  I suppose negative pressure would take the less dense warmer air from inside the tubing and replace it with denser air.   ??? ??? ???  Am I following this correctly?  I always they were rod holders.....

I worked on a commercial fishing boat on the Great Barrier Reef and this method is quite well known to fisho's, its called an "ice slurry" and is used to make ice last longer while at sea and it definitely works a treat.

i use a fist full of salt per gallon of ice/water mixture. might not be optimal but it works for me.

We actually used salt water straight out of the ocean, not sure of the ratio of salt to water but it works.

Actually he was taking about cooling your beer on cold days. The tubing holds the cans out of sight and exposes them to the cold air. I guess technically you don;t even have alcohol in the vehicle.
