Front brake lever question on a 77 CB750k
« on: June 10, 2009, 06:25:56 AM »
I've rebuilt my front master cylinder and caliper, cleaned the brake lines, and replaced the pads to improve braking performance. It is much better but it seems like the bike doesn't really start slowing until the brake lever is almost all the way in. In other words I have very little resistance on the lever until it is at least 50% pulled in.

Do I need to bleed again? Do I need to adjust the front caliper? Is this just normal for this model?

Including an image because I love my bike:

Nice looking bike!!  Let's do what we can now to keep it (and YOU) out from under the rear of a semi!

Excessive travel is likely a caliper adjustment.  Check your repair manual, but I think the inside pad needs to be .006 inches from the disk.

Air and/or weak brake lines lead to a "spoongie" lever which could also be your issue.

Yup, probably air. These systems are kind of a pain. Get a speed bleeder and install that on the caliper. Otherwise a method some use to get out air is to leave the cap off and SLOWLY squeeze the lever back, do it fast and you will need to clean your ceiling! Then try the handle back and let it sit over night. I have never had to do it this way but if you have issues, it should work for you.

Speedbleeder it is! Anyone have a good source for them?

Also, does anyone here use the spin-on oil filter adapters? My oil filter bolt is trashed thanks to the use of SAE wrenches on it over the years.

Check the brake FAQ.  There is a chart in there for sizes.
