Well i started to paint and found holes...DOH!!
« on: June 10, 2009, 04:14:12 AM »
As the title states i started to repaint my Interceptor since the paint was getting faded in spots and it mismatched because of the change to black front fairing and lower chin fairing. Now the bike is all black however a problem was discovered during this process. I had removed a section of bondo from the tank because it had pealed away and started bubbling the paint. Initial inspection indicated it was just because of poorly prepped metal. Removed the paint from the sides of the tank to get rid of any bondo lurking under the surface. Laid down a couple coats of primer..and found out the real reason why. 3 pin holes that revieled themselves as the primer dried.  >:(  I do have a spare tank here but its got a thick rust colored sludge in it...Not sure if it can be cleaned enough to be used. So at this point im looking for options...

Have considered taking the tank into a body shop and seeing if they can cut out the affected section and weld in a patch and possably lining it with some sort of product after patching.

Suggestions?

looking for either ways of repairing the original tank or how to clean the spare. Keep in mind the Interceptor has a built in fuel petcock in it so im not sure what will be required to remove it if that can be done.

POR-15 both tanks. I had the same problem with my 750 F1. I called it "the great spot" (named after Jupiter's great spot). Went to clean it up to paint and it peed all over me.

A POR-15 tank sealer job, and new paint, later, and I was good to go.

Should i do something to the metal as well? Like having the pin holes filled in with welds or anything?

I would. or maybe just melt solder into them.

welds might be better.  What I know about soldering/welding/effective tank repair is just enough to get by, but maybe not optimally. ;D

I've seen a few like that.....

I flush them with a water hose for about an hr....

Weld them with the TIG.

Clean and treat.

Seriously, go to their website and look at the uses.  The stuff is a miracle really.  Tough as nails, sandable, paintable, etc.

Seriously?

I've pried the JB weld off two tanks ....because they leaked.

They eventually leak. Trust me I have lots of tanks.

But if you think JB Weld is the way to fix fuel tanks....carry on.

Pin holes usually mean the metal is thinned, er, a bit too much.   This doesn't leave much to weld onto, and often results in bigger holes, as thin metal melts away from the filler rod far quicker than thicker metal.  Brazing, on the other hand, bonds to the metal surface before the base metal melting point.  Braze the entire corroded area, then file to match the original contour.  Do, de-rust line the tank internals afterwards.

the pin holes look like they developed where the spot welds from the dent pulling process was. So Braze, clean internals and Por-15?
