Axle cap stud broke!
« on: June 10, 2009, 08:56:27 AM »
STUPID STUPID STUPID!!! So I went to torq my front wheel on & snapped one of the studs in the bottom of the fork leg that holds the cap. Can this be taken out? & if so, is it reverse or standard thread? Or  is my leg gonna have to be replaced?

Sure at worst a machinist can drill it out. Or you with a steady hand and a sharp bit.  THey are rt hand (regular way) threads. Righty tighty, lefty loosey. On the bike will be tough. Removal of the fork leg and soaking in acetranny (50/50 acetone/ATF) would be a start.

Good luck.

Theres actually enough to get ahold of. Do you think it would come out with lockjaws?

Good chance. Be nice if you could get some penetrant on /in it first.

How'd it break in the first place, IIMA?

I have an interset. I must remove mine to have the legs cryogenically treated for my project. I'm assuming a stud remover tool will work in my case. I'd hate to snap one off though.

Oh man. So I actually figered I would torq it, well my cheap wrench wasnt clickin & it was right at the point were i started thinking, that seems like a lot. Then snap! Do you know if the lower legs are the same on a 550?

I never got mine out, still had enough threads to torque the nut but I was able to get a new stud from Honda a few months ago.

If you need a pic of it, I can get one this evening.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

At least there was an explanation and it didn't just snap.

I doubt the legs are anywhere near the same.

Ok, I have another set of snotty 750 forks & soaked the studs on a leg & was able to get a good stud out. Now to get the stud outta the one on the bike! Get back in a bit! And yes, Im gonna get a new, good torq wrench!

Success! Wasnt the easiest thing I've done on the bike, but its fixed. Had to pull the wheel & one fork leg out, but once that was done just had to soak the stud in WD40 then vicegrip it out.
