750 tank...differences between older and newer K tanks
« on: December 29, 2009, 10:20:22 PM »
Can you tell me what year?

It has the petcock on the left side and it is not this type:

This is a K tank?

Thanks in advance

That's a K tank. If the petcock's on the left it's post 74 (when they made the swap from the right side IIRC). Petcock's and mounts also change side to side.

Pre-74

Post-74

Does anyone know the differences between pre and post 74 tanks? ie is the 75 and later wider at the front (in the tunnel or outside width), is the tank longer, etc?

Will a cap and locking latch assembly from the older fit a newer?

Also is the petcock at the same spot (as in position front and back), just opposite side as the tanks that have the petcock on the right side?

The reason I ask is this:

I bought a tank, the older style and was able to cut down the pucks and mount it to my 550 k0. I called a few paint shops for prices and they want TOO MUCH money to paint one  :o. I found a junk yard to paint it for 100, but I cannot get the bondo perfect on it and it would really bother me having wavy sides on the tank.

Anyway, I came across a local guy who is selling the tank pictured above, he'll throw in a petcock and cap too, it was blasted (inside and out, it was cut open, blasted, welded, pressure tested, and sealed at a radiator shop) and then painted professionally. He wants significantly less than it will cost me to have filler work and paint work done on the tank I fitted to my bike.

Problem is he lives a a little farther than I'd like to drive, and if the tank wont fit my 550, then I'm kinda screwed and will be out a few hundred dollars.

I believe all the K tanks are the same and interchangeable thru 76 - minus the petcock being on one side or the other.

I had a 73K tank that would fit up on my 75K just fine for example.

Can't answer the cap and lock question unfortunately. I would think yes but someone who knows for sure will be along shortly  ;D

Yes but you'll have to fuss with the carbs a bit unless you want to just run the fuel line to whichever side your intake is on.

I would assume so too, but I do remember coming across a post a while back and someone stating that a newer would not fit on their older 750 without a little fab work. But then again I have a 550, which I assume is smaller in everyway anyway and a little change in tunnel width should pose no problems.

Oh well, I'm going to call the guy up tomorrow and pick it up. We'll see if it will work.  :-\

If not, is someone interested in a VERY NICE 74-76 750 K tank? fresh black paint , professionally done, sealed in the inside by a radiator shop, shaved emblems, and not one single scratch or dent?  ;D
$300

LOL, only selling IF it doesn't work!

Thanks again Iggy, it's nice to have night owl on here like me   ;)

Also anyone reading this months or years down the road. I am going to say that the caps and lock are interchangeable because they are listed for 69-76 on ebay.
