Motion Pro Tool: Am I Being Stupid?
« on: June 11, 2009, 04:46:47 AM »
Well, the stupid part could be in the poll section. As for my Motion Pro chain tool, I'm having a prob pressing the chain plate on. My prob is that the die included with the set does not seem to be sized for the #630 chain on my CB750K. Specifically, the holes on the press die are spaced too narrowly to fit the #630 chain, or so it seems.

Is this the deal with the tool? I could work around it as I've done it without a chain tool before. I had previously made a die out of an old link of chain, but keeping it aligned is a pain.

Wont a very small c-clamp work for getting it on there?

It wont stake it however.

It worked for my 530, the press may not work for a 630.

I've tried that tool, not impressed at all.
On a 630 chain, use it without moving press plate and work back and fore one one pin at a time.
takes way longer than it should, kinda sucks
Went back to a vice grips and a couple of hammers to rivet pins

Convert to a 530 chain, no more problems  :D

I agree, it's not the greatest tool I've ever seen. I just got a used one on ebay for $50 to do my cam chain with. It looks new, and I'm still a little iffy about it. Maybe MotionPro should stick to cables.

I have the same tool - do it one pin at a time. Put the grooved rectangular anvil in the bottom and nothing in the top screw in threaded rivetter. Tighten the screw in rivetter shank down gently on one pin then a couple of hard tweaks with a spanner (don't go all the way), then repeat on the second pin. Once you have them partially going it'll be easy.

The downside is you end up with little circular marks on the side plate - the upside is your chain can then be rivetted using the tool properly with a rivet pin now installed in the rivetter shank. :D
