Fork seal and a spacer?
« on: June 12, 2009, 04:27:56 AM »
Hi

While waiting for the engine parts I decided to rebuild some other parts.

After I took fork seal out I noticed there was a gap between seal and where seal suppose to seat. In another word, seal thickness was 11mm and seal seating depth was 14mm (up to c-clip groove). First, I thought both forks were missing washers. I checked this forum and service manual and it seems there are many variations.

Lower fork is stamped 341

What say you?

Thanks

Yup, it's just like you described it, I just seated the seal deep enough to get the clip in position, the rest of that depth is unimportant.
Good Luck.

The early seals were the short ones, later (341) were taller. But if they are aftermarket seals they often come short with a washer.

AS mentioned, you can do without. If they are OEM, someone bot the old seals, which will work in any fork. If one buys the tall seal, it will only work in a later leg.

The taller seals had a third lip to make them seal better.

I just wanted to say that right now I am WAY OVER MY HEAD with this project.
You were so correct when you said " just ride it - it's old machine, oil leak and engine noise are fine ".

I just want to reiterate to new comers - JUST RIDE IT!

Yeah, I am glad I paused when I was thinking of cracking the engine to change all the gaskets and oil seals out. I tuned it up, new elec. ignition, new coils, cleared up my carb problems witha good cleaning and it purrs like a kitten.

A little oil leak here and there gives it more personality.

Well that's good and bad. Good you're learning something, bad its riding time. Define a stopping point, get finished up to that point, then ride.

make a list of things to tackle later. Mental or otherwise.

I need to ride a bit more myself.
