Ugh, math is boring, and burning the candle at both ends doesn't help any. I fell asleep during it.... better buy caffiene next time.

After they let me out for good behavior I came back and cleaned out the brake pivot point, and she slid in beautifully and moves very easily. It's amazing what a small build up in paint will do. Got the swingarm back on, and put the All Balls tapered steering bearings on and put the steering stem back in. I was a little worried I'd damaged something as the bottom bearings didn't spin after I'd tapped them on, but with it back together she seems to move just fine. I love that little tool I made for that stupid nut up top. I overtightened it to seat the races then loosend it up all without damaging the stupid nut. Hush, thanks for the writeup on installing those, it was very helpful. I'd done it before, but it's been a year or so.

Tomorrows plan of attack. Get the forks back together and installed, and work on various other things while I wait for it to warm up enough so I can paint. Then it's stripe time!!! I'm hoping it looks as good on the bike as it does in my head. I love the blue but it just seems like it needs something. Then as much clear as I can get on it and let it dry. I'm seriously considering sanding the front fender down a bit with some 400 wet dry to get through some of the clear thats already on it and then just clearing it again. I'm getting very tired of repainting stuff, and the cost is adding up.

I'm also thinking I have a good idea of how I want to do the bags frame, and I might get to mocking that up. Should be interesting to see what starts to go wrong now that I'm making progress  ;)

use this.
http://www.energyfiend.com/caffeine-content/morning-spark
If you get it at the right places, it comes to around $.50/packet... so four redbulls for a buck.  Can't go wrong there... 'cept the heart palpitations, nervous chattering, etc. :D
Seriously, that's what I buy.  I mix up 16 oz, pour 8 in my water flask and head to school.

School will always be more important than your build, though.  (I'm there, I know. I have to remind myself of that lie fact all the time) ;D

Work/school will always be more important than your bikes....until you win the lottery then all bets are off. ;D

Bah, work and school suck, I wanna play in the grease!! ok, tantrum over.

I'm gonna have to start calling it a night earlier when I have school so I can stay awake in my math class. I like the teacher he is actually pretty entertaining, just fatigue I think. Kit, I try to stay away from anything more caffineated than Dr. Pepper. Some of those energy drinks or pills concern me, since all it does is jacks up your heart rate. Since my dads side of the family has a history of the men dieing at around 50 or so from heart attacks, I'm a bit leary of anything that makes my heart beat too fast (except laziness, sadly that doesn't bother me  :( ) So I'll just have to start sleeping.

Just PM'd the member who is making those spiffy braided hoses, hopefully he can make one for mine. I'm a bit iffy on it though, mostly because I'm running low on fundage and I may have to buy a bit more paint before this exercise in insanity is over.... hmm what to do what to do. Well I've got till he answers me back to think about it.

Got the forks all reassembled and put back in the front, it's beginning to look like a motorcycle again  ;D Now I'm off to go paint, I'll try and get some pics posted tonight of the progress, but no promises.

Brandon

PS Welcome back to my thread, even if it is for some non motorcycle advice   ;)

Well got some good sleep last night and I'm now just waiting for my class to start. I got here pretty early to try and get a front row seat, so hopefully I'll stay awake. Still would rather be working on my bike though.

Onto something motorcycle related. I've come to a rather brutal realization last night and that is I am pretty much out of fundage for this year. So I talked with my mom and she agreed to let me put the paint booth back up next year and finish painting some items I didn't get to. I'm going to hold off on the trunk and hardbags until then, and won't be making the hardbag frames or crash guard until next year either. On the bright side, I think I have enough paint and clear left to properly finish what I have left, like the front fender and the side covers.  I also checked out the stripe I painted on the tank and rear fender and I think it goes AWESOME with the paint scheme. I've also decided to just sand the front fender a bit more, paint the stripe and clear it. Now I'm just waiting on some parts I ordered to come in and I'll be reassembling like a mad man. Hopefully I can figure out where everything goes. Between the manual, my pics and this awesome forum I'm sure I'll get it back together with no problems.

I do still have to fab some sort of headlight bucket holder... Pics to come hopefully soon.

Ok, I didn't accomplish much today, got off work and had to sort out a few problems else where. By the time I got to my moms I was pretty much not feeling ambitious. I didn't have enough time to do any painting, and I'm waiting on a lot of parts to really get moving on the reassemble, so I decided to put the hand controls back together. The paint job on them didn't come out super great, but they look a ton better than when I first got them. I wasn't able to get the starter button out for fear of snapping something, so I just taped it off. Anyhow, before and afters of the GT550 controls.

And now for the tank and rear fender. I had a general idea of how I thought the stripe would turn out, but I honestly think it turned out better than I could have hoped for! It's simple yet bold. And since it's straight it only takes a short bit to lay out, as compared to the graphic. I love the graphic, but it takes to long.

Haha, you posted that while I was putting up pics of the tank and fender! Thanks, I'm pretty happy with how they look for now. I may take them apart again next year and do a better job with the red, it didn't turn out quite how I wanted. But for now I'm just gonna be happy that they look pretty good.

:P Don't forget the air filters.

It's still a little bit from being ridden, but getting closer. I'm mostly waiting on parts to get here. I need to cut and weld up the headlight mount, but my bench has painting stuff on in, and I'm not to keen on the idea of making sparks around an open can of laquer thinner. I'm dumb, but I ain't stupid.... I think  ;) . On that note, the Metal Sculpting class is paying off if for no other reason than the safety info we are going over. I swear I counted at least 6 things I've done wrong, a couple that could have ended in my death or blowing the shop sky high  :o It wasn't out of stupidity, but just plain lack of knowledge of what not to do. Still, pretty damn sobering.

Thanks! I think it'd go better on a cafe racer, but it's what I have to go with, and in all honesty I think it goes super well with the colors. I think once I get the trunk and hard bags painted it'll kinda even it out a bit. *sigh* gotta wait on those though.

It should be kinda interesting getting the controls converted from Suzuki's pin out to Honda's. I'll take pics of how to arrange them, or at least how I do it, when I'm done. I still have to go over the harness and clean all the connectors and apply the dielectric grease.

Hopefully I'll actually get something accomplished today, although I suppose updating my thread and reassembling the controls should count as something!

Interesting choice on controls, any reason for the choice?

A couple main ones, one they were cheap, like $30 with shipping on eBay.
2, they are metal, I'm just not impressed with the plastic ones. Both sets I have were cracked, doesn't really impress me.
3, it has all the controls I needed, including an on off for the headlight.

Those were the biggest reasons really. I'd have preferred to stay with pre 80's honda controls but I just couldn't find any metal ones that were in my price range at the time I bought them. With these, if I decide next year that I did a (this website deletes some of the weirdest words, seriously  :-\ ) poor job, I can take them off, sand blast them and repaint them. The plastic ones I'd be afraid to touch. They are gonna require rewireing the connectors and probably the other side on the wiring harness, but that really shouldn't be that hard (famous last words :D )

Well, I was gonna paint the tank black with a red hour glass on it, but for some reason riding a male eating female spider didn't really appeal to me  ::)

Holy Cow Brandon, I didn't even realize that this was going on for all this time and I didn't even realize it. :o Course, back in the whole month of July and for a bit afterwards, I had been stunned by the loss of my mate and even though I was on the forums , I wasn't really with it. :-\ But after hearing about this thread, I felt obligated to give it a look. And Brandon, YOU have gone through a bunch, to realize a goal that you had set and, Buddy, you should be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel before too long. :) And, I have to agree with the comments about that BLUE color, that is totally AWESOME! YOU are the MAN! BTW, you ought to know by now, that you have to kinda overlook Hush now and then. I think it's an affliction or something. :D (sure hope he knows I'm kidding him! ::) ) Seriously though Brandon, when I saw how much there was on this build, I thought about backing out and faking it, but I'm glad that I stuck it out and went through the whole thing. Congratulations on what you have accomplished so far.  8) ;)
