What's an owners manual  ???  ???  ???  ;)

I really think the 750 carbs  I have on there are running fairly rich but I can't really tell till I can do a plug chop. Since I have plans to tour on this bike and Texas is on of my goals, I don't want to tune it too well or when I get there she'll be waaayyy to lean. I did pull the plugs and they are a little sooty but not really badly so *shrug*.

...really?

huh.  Is that the one with CV carbs or not, because the PDs get angry without their choke.

I only use the choke to initially start the bike Kit, once it starts the choke goes all the way in and I wait for the engine to settle.

Dunno - I honestly still don't know what a "CV carb" is, no matter how much I read these forums.  Whatever is on the 1980 model 650.

Also, I put the smileys in there so you'd know that was a comment on the bike, not you.  I read that in the owners manual once and thought, "the hell you say."  My old Suzy was the same way.

@Hush - But I wanna ride now!

yeah they do.  I'm wondering if I don't have a slight air leak in my carb boots... but the monster runs so well right now... I'm going to wait 'til "sometime later" to fix them.  It just starts a little harder than some at 40ish degrees outside, and likes choke for awhile.  ::) She's an old lady. I let her do what she wants. :D

Give in Kit, being without a ride is great!!!!.... ok, I'm full of it. If Delilah runs then ride her till the other bike is rideable. I'm going to do my best to never be without a ride again, if it's within my power.

I redid the valve clearances again, it was really weird as there was almost no play in any of them... I swear there is an evil gremlin who does stupid sh#$ to my bike when I'm not around. Anyhow, regapped everything and set the exhaust to .004 instead of .003. My .002 piece tried to rip off in the machine again, but after every use I inspected it and just ripped it off onto the floor so I couldn't forget about it and bugger it up. I'm thinking I'll just buy a 5 pack of those stupid things. I checked the timing staticly and everything really appears to be in spec so I fired her up. She idles pretty well, but is still a little clacky sounding to me. I swear I can hear the cams and rockers. Oh, I also noticed a little pitting on one of the cam lobes, what would cause that? I realize it's probably not a good thing but it seemed pretty minor and I'll just have to either find another one or pay to have it welded and reground when I get around to redoing this bike in a few years.

I think 2 and 3 must not be firing as much. When I was verifying the timing I noticed that the little tab thingy on the advancer for the 2-3 side appears to be worn or notched for lack of a better term. I'm thinking I'll check the spare engine I have and see what that one looks like and swap them out if they look better. It may not make any difference. I'm probably just being way too picky about everything, she really runs well for a thirty year old machine, especially one thats been put through the misery I've made her endure.

At this point my brake supplies should be here on Monday and I'll try and redo the brakes then. After that I think all I need is the drive chain and I should be able to start riding her and working out the bugs! Well I'm off to see what info I can get on rivetted vs clip master links.

Toodles,

Brandon

I guess it's possible that the noise I'm hearing is engine noise coming out the pods?? It kind of makes sense seeing as how the stock box would have maybe routed it to under the seat. Well, since no one is saying "OH CRAP DON'T RIDE IT OR SHE'LL BLOW!!!" I guess I'll just have to enjoy my handywork. Woohoo, it's soooooo close!!

Next time you start your bike, notice the noise after the first minute, then again note it when the head gets hot to the touch.
It will quieten down a tad after warming all the internal components up to operating temp.

I agree with Soos.......just take it easy and keep an eye on it...these motors are REALLY tough......after she is broken in, then ride as you normally will, lots of high RPM's just means more frequent lash adjusting. ;D

Ok, took off early from work today. There are some advantages to working for large companies with lots of peons, they don't miss just one of them  ;D

I pulled the stock airbox out and started fabbing up the fuse holder/tool holder for under there. I also bought an electronic winker thingy, it makes the blinkers blink!! It's a bit noisy, but I'm sure when the motors running I won't hear it at all  ;) Since I ditched the stock carbs, the airbox was obviously not needed, so out she went. I converted my fuses to AT fuses which for some strange reason won't fit in the handle bars  ::) For a while I had it sitting in the stock tool tray but I never really liked that. So I figured I'd put it under the seat. And when the fuse went out on the starter solenoid, well one more fuse box to relocate. So under the seat they'll go. And I decided to move the winker relay under there as well for easy access, though with luck I won't have to replace it again any time soon. I'm also going to put a little tool pouch under there as well. I'll carry more stuff when I go touring, but for basics the pouch should do.

The stainless brake kit I ordered from Z1 came in, why am I always last on UPS's route?? The little brother and I redid the brakes and they are rock solid now. I figured out that pesky leak, turns out it was what I thought, I'd put one of the rubber bits in backward. Between that, and the stainless brakeline she seems all sorts of solid now, and I think the caliper retracts properly now. I hate bleeding brake lines though. Speed bleeders are awesome other than for when you are first filling the line up. I finally got fed up and hooked a huge syringe to the little rubber hose I'd attached to the bleeder to direct the fluid into the 2 liter bottle I was using and just sucked the fluid out. It worked surprisingly well. All I can say is Hooray, it works now!

I ordered an EK xring chain with clip masterlink, hopefully that will be here in a few days. The weather is supposed to be utter crap tomorrow then get into the 60's for the rest of the week. Once I get the chain installed and just finish up the wiring bits, I think it's time to start riding her and shaking out the bugs!!!

Oh, I do have to cut and polish the fuel tank, but after than, it's riding time!

I'll post some pics soon!

I think I screwed up and ordered a motorcross chain, anyhow it didn't fit and I on-sold it to someone who needed a cheap chain.
I have found the cheapest chains here in NZ to be around $80 (about $50 US) and boy do you have to get it right.
Hey on that note Brandon, can you count the number of teeth on your sprocket as you probably have the back wheel off by now.
I'm thinking of changing the gearing on my 79 650 as it's deadly fast around town (just like the cops wanted) but screams for a 6th gear on the highway.
I need to know what standard 650's are running, if you can give me the front sprocket count too that would be great.....cheers.....Hush.

He is running a set of cb750 carbs.

I believe they were '74 carbs.
Not a straight drop in, some mods(or removal) of the return cable hanger is needed.

Nice carbs for the earlier cb650 head style.

Hush, I'll get you those tooth counts in a day or so.

Soos is right, since he supplied the carbs he'd know  ;D  The stock cable hanger on the 74 750 carbs won't fit on our 650 engines, the push cable holder sticks too far forward. I made my own using some angle iron and brazing some holders on, not the prettiest looking thing but it works for me. If you choose to go this route be aware it's not a direct drop in. The 750 carbs are shorter front to back and the air intake side is about 5mm smaller in diameter. I chose to use K&N pods to overcome this issue, although I believe Soos just used smaller bands and clamped down really hard on the 650 boots. Just be sure to hook the fuel lines up to the right tees  ;)

I went and got the Title put in my name and the temporary tags so as soon as that chain gets here I can take her and get the safety done and then start riding her! Tomorrows agenda is to try and get everything buttoned up and awaiting that chain.

It would be hard to tell unless you had ridden the bike a lot before the carb change weather the original carbs were better or not.
Didn't your model have the CV carbs?
I'm a bit of a fan (don't tell the old guard) of the CV carbs, the throttle opens and it's instant power, these older mechanicals need to be finessed to get the same performance out of them. ;)
