one thing I learned real quick is to prep a surface for paint even if its already been prepped.  F'in paint always runs, sags or fisheyes if you look at it wrong.  You ever though about vinyl decal Brandon?

Thats the kicker, I wiped it down really well with grease/wax remover and tacked it down, it's crazy. Oh well, back to square 2 or 3. As far as a vynil decal, I've thought about it, but then I'd have to pay for it. I've got all this snazzy paint that I've already paid way to much money for, so I may as well use it  ;D

TC, thanks for the compliment and the link. I don't know that I would have been able to use that technique on the first one with how detailed it was. However I have since found a simpler design that I really like so I may use it for that one!

SCJIM, thanks! I was originally going for something darker, but this one is really pretty too, so I'll redo it this way.

And a huge thanks to Soos for offering to bring the carb isolators by tomorrow, and for being willing to part with them  :) See you then!

Brandon
Sure it's for sale! How much you ask?? Well, how much are you willing to pay??? Now triple it, that's the price!

Soos, are you manufacturing them isolators?
Not a bad idea, wanna cut me in? ;D

Ok, so update. I finally have had a turn of good luck, no make that GREAT luck.

Soos stopped on by (sadly sans bike   :( ) and instead of carb isolators what did Santa Soos have in his bag????? A set of 73 750 carbs with some very nice pliable boots on them! I'm gonna have to modify the cable hangers a bit, but WOOHOO! A huge thanks to Soos! And if that wasn't enough, he has some hard saddle bags he'll sell be for a good deal, so I can paint them to match the rest of the bike!! This is better than Christmas!! Anyhow, so seriously though, a sincere thanks to Soos for passing along some good fortune he had. I won't spoil his surprise  ;)

Onto the bike. I went out to look and see how the front fender had turned out and what did I find??? MORE FISHEYES AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!! At this point I decided it had to be in the air system, and it occured to me I hadn't emptied the water out of the water collector or the air compressors for a while. I let it out and I bet I got at least a cup of water from each thing easily, if not more. Hmmmmm that might explain the fisheyes  ::) Just goes to show all the prep in the world won't help you if you have crap in the air you are using to spray with. The upside is I'll just wetsand the fisheyes out of the fender and add more clear, so other than a bit of exercise, no big deal.

After about 30 minutes of sanding on the tank and getting almost nowhere, I decided to put the strip disk on the drill and just do that. It only took a couple hours to do and I learned a few things. First, I had used way too much primer, so in a way it was a good thing I had to strip it. It did gouge the body filler in some places so I've spent the day repairing that and wet sanding the front fender, that is until Soos came, and then we spent a pleasant hour or so talking about bikes and machining stuff. It was great talking to someone else who can appreciate why we go to the extent we do on these old machines.

Seriously though, I am so happy about the carbs and the saddlebags!! Thanks Soos, just can't say it enough!

I remember not too long ago on a Z28 forum the guy said he almost ruined a paint job cause sombody *cough* wife *cough*  used his brand new TEKNA HVLP 1.4 for spraying oil stain on funature :o  He still blamed himself cause he didn't clean the gun out well before spraying.

Moral of the story... buy the wife a spray gun of her own... so as not to use your $500 gun.... wait that had nothing to do with you... my mind wanders after 8pm  ;D

Geez, that'd make me unhappy to say the least. No, my family is really good about not using my stuff incorrectly. They have free access to my tools, but they generally just use a hammer or screw driver (or screwdriver as a hammer  ;) ) Anything that gets fubar'd on my bike is likely my own fault.

On a different note, I wish I had 5 notes to spend on a hvlp gun, I'd love to see the spray difference between it and the little cheapie I bought. Maybe some day if I build myself a permanent spray booth I'll treat myself to one. But for now my no name brand one seems to put the paint on fairly well provided I do my part to keep it fairly clean and supply it clean air.

Well, off to spray the high build primer on the fuel tank and rear fender and then see if I can finish wetsanding that front fender. I'm trying to figure out if the little boogers I see in the clear are stray flakes that I didn't get out when I cleaned it, or if it's what was causing the fisheyes. Hmmm, I may drop by the paint store that has been so helpful and pick up a second touchup gun to use just for clear coating since I really don't feel like spending 3 hours wetsanding every time I clear. And with the money that Soos saved me, (huge thanks again on that one Soos!) I may just do it. hmmmmm

Night and day my friend.  But no matter how good your gun is if you get water in the system your screwed.  In reality unless you paint for a living there is no need to spend more then 100 bucks on a spray gun.  Seeing as how a pro will paint tins for 700-800 its not worth spending 5 bills on a gun and 2 bills on paint, primer, clear, hardeners, and thinner... plus all the prep supplies.

That seems to be the general consensus on the guns, no sense in spending the bills unless you are gonna be doing it pro. Since I can only spray two bikes a year without being considered by the local officials as going "into the biz" there isn't much of a point in dropping 5 notes on a gun. Still, it would be interesting. I'll watch eBay and who knows what will fall in my lap.

As it stands I've decided I'm gonna pick up a second touchup gun to spray the clear with. I've spent at least three hours wetsanding the fender and still haven't made it to the stupid little specs of metal paint that are in it. *sigh* will the spending never end??

Your just getting started on the spending part... you don't know how Mo will run yet.  How Mo will ride.  Whether Mo will need better brakes, suspension or what have you.

With Rina I break all the project into little steps.  That way I get to ride in between to see if it will work or not.

When I put my CBF project on hold I took on so many things and it sat so long and didn't ride it at all I gave up

I did mine over a winter.(and then a little)

Not as easy working in a garage with no heat, and painting is pretty much out of the Q....
But I got what I could get powdercoated(for free) at my last job, so it evened out not being able to paint the tank or side covers.

Winter rebuilding of my bike killed the riding fever pretty well.
Winter is my fa. time to mod things.

Don't I know it. I'm praying the PO knew what he was talking about and she'll run ok, but only time will tell. Like I said, I did this all backwards. Worst case scenario, I'll have a great looking non-runner  ;)

Yeah, when I buy my own place I plan installing some sort of heater so I can do as much of this crap in the off season as possible. Should also help with the cabin fever.

So I cleaned out the new spray gun I bought (the cup seemed pretty dirty for some reason), shot the second round of clear on the front fender. AND THERE WERE FISHEYES!! Seriously, what gives. I emptied the compressors and water trap out, installed a desiccant snake in the one line that I'll be using solely for the spray gun, and even put in secondary desiccant filters on the guns themselves! So I'm as sure it isn't the air as I can be, given I'm not sure how I'd test it. This leads me to think there are only a few other real possiblities.

1. Even after a good wet sanding, whatever caused them in the first place was still present.

2. I didn't get all the packing oil/grease out of the gun before I used it. I sprayed laquer thinner through it, and removed and wiped down everything, so this seems a little unlikely. Still, I took the cup in after this and washed it with soapy water just to be sure.

3. There is something wrong with the paint itself... I'm thinking this is unlikely as I have not had any problems with this quart of clear prior to spraying my gas tank. It just occured to me, the catalyst I am using was first used on the gas tank, hmmm I wonder if this could be part of the issue.

4. There is something in the ambient air that is getting on the part. Since I use wax grease remover before I coat and use a silicon free tack cloth, this doesn't seem as likely.

At this point I'm thinking to eliminate 1 I'll spray the tank next and see if I get fish eyes. If that is the case, it doesn't entirely rule 1 out as a contributing factor, but makes all the others very possible. I'm also going to order some fisheye eliminator and see if that will help with the front fender. What a fun learning process  :(

Oh well, I'm still stoked enough about the carbs and saddle bags that this isn't getting me too down.

I won a set of controls for a 78 GT550 off eBay that I'm going to spiff up and use on the bike. I just don't like the plastic ones.

I also painted the gas tank again, and got..... (drum roll) FISHEYES!!!!!!!! But I think I've figured out what it is that is causing it. Prior to working on the tank and fenders I never tacked anything off, but since I consider these parts the center pieces as it were, I was tacking them off before the clear in a effort to cut down on dust. Apparently something in the tack cloth is causing this. *sigh* more wet sanding tomorrow.

I used to just wet sand, then spray down the auto prep stuff, then wipe down with a lint-free cloth.

Did you grab those because you particularly liked that specific style, or was it because they were the ones you liked best that were available?  I ask because, like you, I don't like the plastic ones, but I can't seem to find new aftermarket controls anywhere.  I was figuring I'd have to buy some from another model and retro-fit them unless someone has a source.

I got these because they were cheap on eBay, and the cases are metal. I'll be stripping them down and repainting them, and obviously need to redo the connectors. My biggest requirements were they needed to have the lighting controls on the left one like ours do, and that the housings be metal. Other than that, I was looking for as inexpensive as I could go. I'll definately do pics and a writeup on what I do and how well it works.

I believe it was razor that used GXSR controls, only problem he ran into is with the starter. On the 650 oem starter button it kills the headlight temporarily while the button is engaged. With the GXSR controls it won't accomidate the light portion of the starter sequence. I'm hoping the 550 ones I bought will, since they are similar era bikes. If not, the left hand one looks like it has a shutoff switch for the headlight.

You can tell if the switch will cut the headlight or not real quick. If there are 4 wires coming off the start button then yes if not then no.

I will be sticking a double pole relay on to fix the problem. ON the right control there are 2 wires for the headlight and 2 wires for the starter solenoid. The Start wire will be tied to the relay coil and the 2 blue...(I think they where blue) would go to the switch#2 side. When the start button is pressed the relay energizes and cuts the heallight let go of starter the relay off and the headlight comes back on.

If you have to do this with yours keep an eye on my thread I will post pics and schematics for the mod

It looks better in person.
I'm interested in seeing it after it's done painted and running :)
But I just added to his list of "to do" things, a set o hardbags and the mounting frames.
Another 2 items to match to the rest of the paintjob!

Good luck avoiding the fish eyes!

I'm interested in seeing it after it's done painted and running
But I just added to his list of "to do" things, a set o hardbags and the mounting frames.
Another 2 items to match to the rest of the paintjob!

I don't mind, now I can get them to match the rest of the bike!

It looks better in person.

Thanks! It's hard to get the depth to come through with just a simple digital camera. Plus you don't get to see the sparkle of the gunmetal underneath.

Soos, thanks again for dropping those by today so I can get working on them! Good luck with the carbs, by the time you're all done everyone will be hopping up their 650 carbs  ;)

Hopefully I'll have some pics of it getting a beautiful, smooth clear coat over the lovely blue. Sadly there hasn't been much in the way of progression, since I took it back down to the metal again so I could fix some body work mistakes I had made.

Go on just send me the motor Brandon, someone might as well put some miles on it while you pee around for the next year getting the paint right. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!
