Fake IMAX theaters
« on: May 13, 2009, 02:36:54 PM »
Anyone else have this problem lately?
Particularly with AMC?
The old lady and I were going to see Watchmen a couple of months ago and I am remembering the planearium one which was huge, took up your entire range of view.
We pay the extra duckets at the AMC in Olathe and we get in and I look at the screen and say, "This is supposed to be an IMAX screen?" PFFFFFFFFfffffffff!!!!!!

RIP Off!!!! Apparently these companies are getting away with stamping them as IMAX on normal sized screens. Total, utter crap.

Technically it's the film and projectors, and the sound system, that make it an IMAX theater, regardless of screen size.  That said the IMAX screen nearest to my house is disappointingly small.  It's a waste of the format imo to show it on anything less than a ginormous screen even if the definition is way better.

Real IMAX to me is a minimum 72' wide screen.
I'd bet the one we went to was 58' wide.

I'm not quite to that point yet, but I go to the theater about once every two years.  My wife and I are going to see Star Trek this weekend, though.  Next trip to the theater will probably be Tron 2 (TR2N).

Pretty much everything else can wait for the DVD.

Not only do the theater need to be setup with IMAX screens, cameras, and sound..the film has to be shot with IMAX cameras to truly be an "IMAX" movie. Traditionally IMAX is shot on 70mm film which is VERY expensive compaired to standard 24/35mm film typically used for movies. Few Hollywood movies have ever used 70mm. One in particular is Apocalypse Now. Yes it was released in 1979 but watch is on DVD or in HD...you will think it was released this year. The film quality is amazing.
