Yea I was wondering because after I saw them I looked all over the net for a set with no luck only found a set that look simular for a xs650.  Those pipes would look good on my 550f project.
Keep it shinny side up.

Well I ordered another set for a mate who looks like he might not want them so I was planning to shove them on flea bay to get my money back if not....will let you know if that happens...

She's running....! :o

I gave in finally and had someone else look at things. I have checked every possible thing but was missing something so a fresh pair of eyes was needed as I could no longer see the wood for the trees. Turned out to be the ignition timing which I always suspected but as I checked and double cheked that setting up I couldn't figure out why.

So, in steps Ben, a talented mechanic I know and he confirms yes, the ignition was set up perfectly as per the instructions from Boyer Bransden. When he got the thing part firing with help as I had always been able to, he got the strobe on it and it was miles out timing wise. So he times it up with the strobe and it runs sweet as a nut above 4000 revs. What's at fault here then - I guess it can only be the instructions provided with the ignition which I'm amazed at as Boyer are such a good company to deal with. Maybe I got the wrong instructions in the right box for some reason?  ???

Next jobs are to try and get it to idle even if it's around 4000 revs. Given these are keihin cr31s I reckon that's about the best I'll get. Then I need the spacer for the points cover and she's done, all ready to fire up and film to post here and so I can crack Sam's windows while he's busy touring stateside and nip in and picnh his collection of adult art films LOL!

As soon as I get a film of the bike running I'll post under a new thread. Who knows, maybe someone will take pity on me and nominate me for BOTM? (Iknow....shameless!  ;D)

oh yeah! congrats!

even if those are CR's you should still synchronize them. That could smooth out idle big time.

What sort of timing are you running by the way? If your instructions are for a street motor, then a hot roded one would need a bit less advance.

I detect a hint of humour in your tone LMP, it might be that you're a tad relieved after all.  ;D

Well done, look forward to the next report.

Yeah it's been a bit of a slog I can tell you. I'm used to old Honda twins (am I allowed to say that here?) so this 4-cylinder was a real voyage of discovery for me. I guess I still have a lot to learn  ;D

Ignition is running at about 38 degrees advance TG which is a bit less than my twins run, they're 40 degrees. I need to find a source of seals for the crabs though - float bowl seals are old and leaking. Suspect that'll be the next wild goose chase unless anyone here knows of a supplier for old keihin cr seals?

Ah yes - Sam's video collection, well, some say, he has the directors cut of 42DD Leather Lovers on 8 track tape....others say that there is a scene in Naughty Nancy at the Naked Nunnery with a nun dressed all in white who has a bald head! We just know him as Sam CB750A  ;)

At last............here at last! A big cheers for LMP! ;) ;)
Great must feel as a big relieve. Once had a 'big' problem with my CB900, misfiring all over the place! My son came up and said: hey dad, look at your advancer, no son all is well down there. But to satify him took it out and........ had it mounted 180 degrees the wrong way. One push and running so sweet....!
Sometimes you just need someone to push you in the right direction.

Cheers, Rob
Better sorry for failing then for the lack of trying.

You're dead right Rob - sometimes you just get too close to things and can't see the obvious. I am very relieved, just need a good day now to get her outside and give her a good warm up and video...

Thanks for the kind words bookjockey - six years of hard work, yes, it feels pretty cool to finish it and I think I'm starting to like the old girl a bit more than my CB450 racer, which is a pretty big statement LOL!

if you have built good squish into the heads (reasonable considering your big bore job), I'd run it at a lot less than 38. the twins had much deeper chambers so need a lot of advance. My 500 runs on 30-32 but check in a dyno for best power . dont know how much your ignition retards things at idle, but by 4000 it could be already  advancing things too much and keep the motor revving high.

TG - no big bore job on my bike it's still running at 750cc or there about with 62mm pistons and shorter stroke.

Mick - Stafford might be on, however I sent it in to classic mechincs for Stafford in October and they said they didn't want it on their stand as it wasn't anything special! I think they must have used the tea-boy to make their selections especially seeing some of the tat they did have on the stand, including bikes shown for the second time around.

So, I think I'll see about getting it on the Historic Honda stand instead, at least they know a good Honda when they see one! ;D

Maybe though it needs to be in the GP paddock and started up a few times, I can bring the Moriwaki endurance racer too, should upset a few of the neighbours LOL

OK, admit to not knowing a whole lot about tuned 750's but still, 38 sounds like too much to me.

I honestly don't know if it is or isn't TG - do any of the engine gurus like Mike or Mark (KOS) have a view?

As if by magic, I also received a packet in the post today from Nova Engineering. It's my custom spacer for the points cover and so I think I have everything to finish the bike completely now. Just an hour or so bolting bits on and a bit of a clean and that's it! Wow, what will I do with myself after all this time....I feel a bit lost actually  ???

I've followed this thread and Ultimate motor build and waited to post...  The six year itch is finally over!  Congrats on not only the motor build but the bike as a whole!  That is one sick bike I'd love to see some day!!!  But don't let me to close as common sense and rational might leave me!  DAMN that is one beautiful bike!!! :o

On another note did you ever get the video of the motor running or of you taking a quick spin?
Congrats again!  Very Inspirational!!!

Cheers,

You're kinda right I think Simon - I should finish some of the other ones first though like the XV750 Yam restore (my first post test bike found 17 years later!) and my 50cc Ducati cucciolo which is about 80% done.

I've always hankered after a 250-4 race replica though but junking the water cooling and trying to run an air cooled setup somehow...maybe that's a thought to stay with the Hondas?

What's the setup with the race paddock at Stafford then - do you get involved in the organisation?

Anders - thanks for your kind words, I guess anythings possible if you throw enough money at it LOL!  ???

I'll be videoing the bike running soon. I have to say I expect it to be loud to the point of being evil, it was bad enough when popping and banging so full running might cause a bit of distortion on the video camera sound recording but hey, that's what you want to hear right? won't be this weekend as guess what? It's raining cats and dogs in Manchester again  ;D

hi simon , when i was involved with the forgotten era club we had a stand at stafford for several years and got to know all the mortons media people quite well . although they thought the stand was only an excuse to get drunk for two days [ which it was ]  they always asked us back . one of the people who arrange the race paddock is an ex frc racer and he would love your bike . there are some great bikes at the show but no matter how good they are who wants to see the same ones year in year out?  time for new blood !    if they insist on an old classic with a good racing pedigree  we will just have to display sam !
the alternative of course is to have our own sohc stand

oh and the ducati sounds good
