What kind of air filters are these...

... and what are the pros and cons? I was looking at some cone filters, but these look pretty slick.

Velocity stacks.

Quote
A velocity stack is a trumpet shaped device which is added on to the air entry of an engines fuel system, carburetor or fuel injection. It is designed to:

1. Allow smooth and even entry of air into the intake duct with the flow stream adhering to the pipe walls.

2. Slightly modify the dynamic tuning range of the intake tract by functioning as a small reverse megaphone which can extend the duration of pulses within the tract.

3. Alter the dynamic tuning speed if it includes extra length thereby changing the tuned length to a lower rpm.

Those look like velocity stacks to me.

Which do you think would be better for long distance travel? The Cone Filters or the Velocity Stacks? Or the stock air box? I know it's a balance with filter, jets and the rest. I want to maximize distance performance.

As much as we like the simplicity of pods, or stacks, the fact remains that the bikes were meant to run with the box. If you have it tuned correctly, you can run anything, but it's alot of work. The stock air box will perform the best with the least amount of money, if it's on good shape.

(i run uni-pods) :D

airbox, thats what your motor was built to run with and the factory USUALLY knew what they were doing. theres NO filtration at all with the velocity stack, except for a screen sometimes in the mouth of the stack. pod filters are ok but theres a good bit of trial and error in tuning with them, what works on one stock motor might not work on another stocker.

 :D

I just know better, My stock air box was garbage and it was cheaper for me to get pods and tune. I have nothing but time, and I love to learn, Look at it this way, I can ride it now. I've only been in the carbs 6 times.
But, since i don't mind tinkering, and I enjoy learning about the stuff, it doesn't hurt my feelings to get into them again tonight or tomorrow.
Good luck. I'll be driving through st. louis on friday!

Driving? Your bike?

I love learning as well. I'm a do-it-yourself learner. I can't believe I JUST got into motorcycles. I love taking things apart and putting them back together and I love older things. Duh. But I'm lucky. The bike I bought was in nearly perfect condition. Makes it hard to learn, though, when everything is already working.

Yea I don't know that I'd mess with it till the season was over.

No, not riding, driving. Going to Mods vs. rockers in chicago this weekend.

Just go? But don't put velocity stacks on yet.

I'll put the stacks on, but then I'll just have to push my bike to Chicago. I'd probably have to push it anyways. I need new chain and sprox pretty bad.

What is "distance performance"?

That is survives running a long while?
No filter choice by itself is going to improve HP in the cruising RPM range.  None of the filters offer enough restriction at that speed to limit air induction capacity.  Do not confuse this with the filer changing the carb throat vacuum which has a great deal to do with drawing fuel from any given jet orifice, and thus the A/F ratio delivered to the engine cylinders.

The stock paper filter will be the absolute best in a dust storm for having the engine survive the event.  A velocity stack will just let the engine injest the dust and a "dust blast" the cylinder walls, increasing wear and contaminating the oil supply.  Most of the foam element filters will also let in more dust than paper types.

But, if you wish to operate your engine at 11000RPM (or make it look like it could to passersby without actually running the engine), go with velocity stacks.  They make for a great photo op while parked.

I have been looking for velocity stacks for my 77 550K and cant seem to find a source.  Someone metioned www.loudfastugly.com but he no longer has them.
