Fuel Delivery (74 550)
« on: June 16, 2009, 07:33:06 PM »
Just got everything buttoned up on my project 550 and I went to start it. It runs just fine for a second on starting fluid, but then it stalls out. I have the petcock open (tried both positions) and the fuel lines don't seem to be getting any gas. when i took the tank off to paint it, I did take the lever off of the petcock to try and diagnose a leak it had when i bought it. I am fairly certain that i put it back together properly. with the fuel line off, i can get it to dribble a little bit of gas but not a whole lot.

Any thoughts?

Is your cap vented properly?  Do it with the cap off and see what happens...

With respect, guys, I don't think your prob. is solved...the flow of gas from the tank needs to be 'big' and steady...if you turn the gas on with only a 'dribble' flow and wait a few mins., the carbs will fill and the bike will start. Have you ridden the bike on the road a few miles ? A gas-cap vent blocked would not show-up for several miles as the vacuum in the tank would take time to build.
Rust in tank sucked into the petcock seems more likely, IMO.
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,
