carb issues
« on: June 24, 2009, 05:34:40 AM »
ok, been working on this bike for some time. its all done exept for some minor tweeeks. Main issues is I can't seem to get my carbs working correctly. cleaned, rebuilt, differenrt setting, jets, you name it. RIght now, it purrs like a kitten at idol, but if a crank the throttle wide open it cuts out, when I drive it and give it wot, it bogs at first then goes. also, my idol drops and can seem to get a happy spot for it. I am running pod filters mac exhaust, total dyna ignition wires coils. current mains are 110 4th clip on pin. carbs are sycnced.
any suggestions to get it running right would be helpful.

Oh carbs......so much fun. ::) Check out the carb FAQ section here if you haven't already. Lots of good information on there. Both of Harry's posts have been particularly helpful to me for figuring out rich vs. lean conditions without doing a full on plug chop.

I have a '76 CB550 with pretty much the same setup as yours: Uni pods (the foam ones,) Mac exhaust, 110 mains, one clip from bottom on the needles, and my mixture screws are turned out only 1/4 turn. That seems to work pretty well for me.

Good luck.... ;)

Did you have it running properly with the standard airbox before you slapped on pods?
Did you run a full tune-up first?

Stock. I can't remember what the exact measurement is, but I set them at whatever the Clymer manual says...
