My dad and his partner Bob Lemon raced the hell out of it before I took it off his hands when I turned 18. My dad was always complaining that it needed a 6th gear.

Since someone else mentioned W & S.......

I bought a "new" starter cover from them off EBay. You guessed it - obviously used. Complained to them. They said they must've shipped the wrong one and they'd ship a "new" one. Musta thought I was stupid because the frauds shipped... you guessed it again - another used one that they polished up. Got my money back. Anyone need a "new"  ::) starter cover?

Hell NO!

You looking at these from the Honda Stealer on EBay? That guy pisses me off!

$86.72 from www.ServiceHonda.com. What most people don't realize is that even though the parts list says TWO are required and the parts list shows 1, that 1 is ONE SET OF TWO.

Keep asking questions. We've been around the block a few times.

Well, I thought I could extend my budget with some smooth talkin, but she said "no!" in that one voice (you know the one).

So here is my revision of the list that keeps me under budget...

820.00   Stage 2 head with springs, guides and new KPMI valves
  204.50  41a Hard Weld CAM
   30.00   HD CAM chain
 240.00    Cylinder bore
 450.00    JE 836 kit
   60.00   Gasket set
   90.00   Primary Chains
  125.00  Dyna-S
  126.00  Dyna DC-1 coils
    17.00  Ignition wires
    80.00  HD Cylinder studs
  125.00   Shot peen stock rods

= 2367.50
 +~200 shipping costs

$2567.50 ish

Do you guys agree with this being the right compromises? Or should I keep the 736 pistons, hone/ring those and get the Stage 3 headwork like this...

1290.00   Stage 3 head with all the trimmings
  204.50  41a Hard Weld CAM
   30.00   HD CAM chain
   60.00   Gasket set
   90.00   Primary Chains
  290.00  Undercut & beadblast trans
  125.00  Dyna-S
  126.00  Dyna DC-1 coils
    17.00  Ignition wires

= 2232.50
 +~350 shipping costs

$2582.50ish for this one.

How bout it?

Personally, I'd do the stage 3 with 736 pistons and a decked head, for a bit more compression. I do enjoy the 750 at 9k rpm, though. Some like a bit more power on the low end.

I would also step up the cam....the 41A is pretty mild. Same price for a more aggresive Web cam so it's a win/win deal. ;) You will need the 836 kit for a heavier cam.

Not sure what J&E look like. but Wiseco look sort of plain, cant say which is better..

The only reason I can find to stay at 736cc is for class racing, or to be able to say, I can easily make this bigger.

I suspect if you priced stock os pistons and new rings, you may loose interest in that route quickly..

Nuthin wrong with a bit more comprssion, if you can still run regular..

I disagree that it's the 'only' reason, but I defer to the 'real' old timers (not of age, or the 'title' we get here, but to experience) here in terms of making a tractable, good all around high powered bike.

I will admit, the 736 is better for parade use..

I am only speaking for personal view, but for the money, I have found the bore kit, gives the greater increase, over a wider range, than some other mods.. but yes a cam is cheaper.. but will shift the gains more to one end of your operating range..

Well, I thought I could extend my budget with some smooth talkin, but she said "no!" in that one voice (you know the one).

So here is my revision of the list that keeps me under budget...

820.00   Stage 2 head with springs, guides and new KPMI valves
  204.50  41a Hard Weld CAM
   30.00   HD CAM chain
 240.00    Cylinder bore
 450.00    JE 836 kit
   60.00   Gasket set
   90.00   Primary Chains
  125.00  Dyna-S
  126.00  Dyna DC-1 coils
    17.00  Ignition wires
    80.00  HD Cylinder studs
  125.00   Shot peen stock rods

= 2367.50
 +~200 shipping costs

$2567.50 ish

Do you guys agree with this being the right compromises? Or should I keep the 736 pistons, hone/ring those and get the Stage 3 headwork like this...

1290.00   Stage 3 head with all the trimmings

   60.00   Gasket set
   90.00   Primary Chains

  125.00  Dyna-S
  126.00  Dyna DC-1 coils
    17.00  Ignition wires

= 2232.50
 +~350 shipping costs

$2582.50ish for this one.

How bout it?
I would stick with the first list which includes the 836 kit

I'll agree with ya, Mike. I ran this set-up with a 63a grind cam and it was great bang for the buck. Sneak in a Dyna 2000 ignition, and ask for 29mm CR carbs for Christmas.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

My dad raced the Mikuni's tho man. How many CB's have kuni's strapped on em? Well okay, maybe a few - but the nostalgia of these carb's is too great to even consider changing them out. They're old but they're good 'n old   ;D
