Original MSRP of our amazing Honda CBs!
« on: June 15, 2009, 09:35:15 PM »
I was just curious...
I would love to know how much these bikes retailed for when they were new. I wouldn't expect info for every single model and year, but I any info would be interesting. Specifically the 'Mighty 77 750k'  ;)
Anyone have any hard facts or recollections?
Awesome!

I remember distinctly, I paid $1425 for my 1971 K1 in April 71. I was 18. It was my lawn mowing money up to that point. The dealer where i worked was getting about $1700 for them MSRP as fast as he could get them.  There were other dealers in the boonies getting $1400 or less, that's why he sold it to me for that. he didn't want me going elsewhere and telling my buddies.

That's great! You must have mowed a ton of lawns to rack up that kind of dough in '71! What was the going rate? 50 cents a lawn?!? Comic books were still 12 cents in those days!

I think about that often. A neighborhood lawn was $5. Now they get about $50 for the same lawn. A top of the line motorcycle was $1400, now they're about $14,000 (my FJR for example).

Its all relative. I mowed 2 lawns a night, 3 nights a week after school, (summertime was easier) an apartment complex on the weekend for $150, I was quite the go getter. I had a car, a trailer, my own rider and trim mower. A 67 650 Bonneville and my CB750.

I laid down 18 $100 bills for my new 75 750F in 3/75. I believe I got it for $100 less than MSRP. Pug Vickers Honda in Huntingdon, TN. Billed himself as the world's largest Honda dealer at the time.

just like the late 60's & early 70's muscle cars going for 10 to 100 and in some cases 1000 times what they cost originally, even a lot of our bikes are doing the same. sandcast for 30k, triumph's for 22k, and the list goes on.... my own is almost 10 times the msrp.  BUT.....that is only if you can find someone that is willing to pay that....  I believe that mine sold for $1755 in 74

Since the discusion mentioned what odd jobs paid. I found a calculator that would tell you what the aforability would be in today's dollars. I used 1978 as the year and the nominal amout of $2,000 as the price. This is what is would be today $9,089.16. If you would like to try out other items or years here is the calculator.

I will never forget those numbers. In 1969 at 16 years of age I walked into the honda dealer in Baton Rouge la. to pick out a cl125 (twin cylinder). The 125's were $525 & the red & the blue cb750's on the floor were $1525. There was also roomers of a gold one being available shortley. all this was way beyond my means. A bit off topic but - what really peed me off I had worked my tail off to raise enough doe for the down payment. While I was waiting for my new hard earned cl125 to be prepped a rich "Weenie" of a kid came in with his father (not dad or old man) but his "faaauuuther" to pick out a new candy red cb350 as a birthday present !

My 1976 CB750 K6 was purchased by the original owner from Stillwater Honda in Stillwater MN. According to the original sales invoice the cash price was $1895.00, Wisconsin sales tax (he was a Wisconsin resident)was $75.80, Freight-Setup was $75.00, Handling was $5.00 for a grand total of $2050.80.  He actually bought it on March 21st of 1977.

From some 1976 sales brochures I have that someone wrote the dealers asking/quote prices on:

CB-750                  $2150.00
CB-550                  $1810.00
CB-750A                $2300.00
GL-1000 (Goldwing)  $2950.00

I am not old enough to participate here but I also mowed lawn to buy a used transAm when I was 17 years old. It was the greatest feeling working on your own engine which you bought with your own money. My gf used to say I worked on the car more than on her  8). Anyway, I have 11year old son now. While reading the posts I can't help but to wonder if my son will do the same when it's his time.

$1379.00 for a 1975 CB550,.. My brother in law worked there so they swapped a hooker header for the stock pipes. I remember dreading the $47.00 a month payments, now my cable TV bill is more than that. :o

First new thing I ever bought,.... wore it out then rebuilt into a roadracer. Best money I ever spent, I owned maybe 12 more since then and still have one in the basement. I turn 18 again every time I ride it.

My recollection is that I paid $1700 for my 1970 CB750. But not all my synapses are firing these days. I bought mine in Sunnyvale, Ca. I ran into a fellow the other day who bought a new 1970 in Oakland, Ca and told me he paid $1300. Can't believe there'd be tat much difference in 50 miles, but maybe.

As i mentioned in my post, Here in indiana, in April 1971, I paid $1425 from the dealer i worked for, in Indianapolis, he usually sold them for $1725. But one could drive 50 miles east and get then for under $1400. So it was very much what the traffic would bear in the local area.

We were selling all we could get at $1725. The dealer in Greenfield was selling even more, where he got them was always a mystery, doing a statewide volume business.  I think $1300 was close to cost, but that may have varied depending on volume.

I doubt it NoBrake.  The stickers on cars back in our day were "Erbach, Holly & Hurst".  Today's teens have stickers that say "Sony, Pioneer & Clarion".  Can't say I blame them.  It takes quite a bit of coin to buy the computerized diagnostic equipment it takes to work on modern machines and all the decent older stuff is owned by.... US!! HEHEHE!
