Elaborate on "changed the clutch".  From what to what.  Why did you change the clutch?  Did you soak the (assumed) new frictions in oil before installation?

Do you have problems moving to neutral from 1st or 2nd?

the clutch was slipping like crazy and it was fully adjusted when i changed the cork rings( not sure tech name)i was told to just put a light layer of oil on them before reinstalling them.... and i have a heel to toe shifter and theres always a little prob shifting into neutral unless its not running ( its a little easier when its stopped) and then its tough to get it out and this prob happened before the clutch change it doesnt slip tho now

The cork rings ARE the friction discs and should be soaked over night before installation so they are thoroughly saturated with oil.  The pressure from the springs will try and keep the the fictions dry form their constant squeezing.  So, there is no slippage, partially attributed to lack of oil, but the clutch is also now dragging and putting pressure on the trans and shift components.  This is why you clash gears during engagement, and also why disengagement of gears is now problematic (assuming you adjusted the clutch disengagement mechanism correctly).
I urge you to fix the clutch properly, or you'll soon be looking for trans components, gears, shift forks, shift drums etc.  All of which require the engine come out of the frame.

...normal practice is to change-down and release the clutch in each gear to enjoy the engine braking and minimise the time without the drive-train connected to the motor...or am I just 'old school' ?

That's the way I do it, too.  Maybe, I'm old school, as well?

I rev my engine up a little while downshifting.  Nice thread, a lot of good takeaways.  I'm going to practically come to a stop before moving to 1st.  Sometimes, I can't get back into first at a stop unless I let the clutch out a little.  I like to think that it's disengaging so well, it doesn't want to go back in  ???
