Early 750 cylinder, &Lash caps Question
« on: June 15, 2009, 10:02:15 AM »
I have read on here that Manley valve stem tips can wear a bit, and to use lash caps;
 2 Qs.. What are they from, & will they stay on with .012 or .014 clearance?

 I have big bore barrels, that are early, would like to have them on my 69 motor in the end.. trying to get a fairly early topend on it. So these cylinders, have the different shape of the oil drain holes..between 1&2..and 3&4.. if you have seen these you know what I mean. How long  did they use these, I am thinking maybe Ko ?.. not sure if 71 still used them?.

 Also I do have an early style breather cap  (I will use), for top of the valvecover, I know they were different on early ones.

Hi.I have the Manley lash caps on my R.C. Eng. stainless valves.Valve clearance is .012".I have had no issues and the caps stopped the tappet adjusters from pounding in the top of the valve stems which was becoming an issue.   Rock On

Hey Frank,
my lash caps never fell off either, RC 315 cam, 22 yrs old, redline at every opportunity.
The Manleys have a slight bevel to the tip edge as well, I saw more adjuster wear into the stock valve tips than the Manleys I used even without the lash caps...

Frank,

The Manley valves do have that reputation. Mike can get you some caps I believe. I put Manley intakes in when I first put the 810 in it but did not use caps. They now have 25,000 hard miles with the Yoshi Daytona cam and the S&W HD springs. I have 1 cylinder that always seems to want to blue my Kerker slightly with the valves all adjusted the same. I suspect that may be the issue by not allowing an accurate lash setting. Don't think it is opening the valve as much since the tip of the valve may be dimpled and the adjuster screw is traveling too far into the valve tip to open it up properly. When I break it down later this year to do the 900 I can take some pictures and measurements and report in.

 I have seen most Manely's mushroom and destroy the tips if not capped. Later Manley's appear to have a hardened tip. I have lash caps for those valves. The tips have to be ground .040. The caps stay on no problem....they are deep enough for .015 and the oil gets under the cap and creates a "suction" which certainly helps.

Thanks I was suspecting the fit and the oil would hold them on, sounds like everyone uses them.

 So does anyone know when the cylinder change occured? The later oil drain holes have nicely radius corners, the early have sharp square corners.
