How Much of Your Income Is Spent on Motorcycling?
« on: June 16, 2009, 01:58:14 pm »
I often wonder what is a reasonable amount to spend on my passion for motorcycles and motorcycling.  I am currently debating buying a new VFR800 (2008 or 2009).  Sometimes I think I go overboard, but I have a good income and live comfortably.  I figure I spend about 10% of my gross income on motorcycling.  What about y'all?

Its a hard thing to quantify......

Does the shop count?

Power bill for the shop?

Tools bought in the last few years or just the motorcycle ones?

Gas, Oil, Insurance?

Man...

Why you gotta make it tricky? :)

Bikes...parts...gear...bike specific tools...

You know as well as I when you spend a dollar whether or not it is for the motorcycle junkie push...

After I got my 550 running right, that was all I needed.  I'm only out of pocket for maintenance now.

I don't ever want to know! ;D  As long as I'm happy and able to keep busy, and can pay my bills without struggling, then I don't care how much I spend on my bikes.  Besides, if I ever saw the actual number laid out before me I would probably cry. :'( :'(

I added up how much I have in my bike  vs. how much I've made this year. That's how I got my percentage.
I'm less than 1% but only by about 70 dollars.

It really varies, as some years were near 0, others much higher. But on average in my adult life its 10% per year. There were years I didn't make much, lived in a house with a bunch of losers (like myself) and it was probably 50%, the rest was for rent and beer. Oh, and food.

I complicated it because theres stuff I use for motorcycles that I use for other stuff.... ;)

For example....the wheel bearing grease I use happens to exactly meet the Specifications called for by Cessna for lubing flap motor drive threads.....

Is it Motorcycle or Cessna?

I use it for both......

Shop is the same way.....

Welding equipment? Gets used for lots of stuff.

Air compressor, beadblast cabinet, hand tools, even the motorcycle lift get used for all sorts of stuff.

If it were a question of Gearhead hobby expenditures I could ball park it....

Some years not much. But like last year I spent alot more than normal. New trailer, two bikes, lots of accessaries and such. This year, I will be buying parts, paying for professional help where needed and all the other stuff that goes along with trying to restore a bike that sat outside uncovered for 26 years.

cash in my pocket = burrito, tank or three of gasoline, front tires and lots of oil. I spend about 50%, but then again I'm kind of really poor.

According to my new budget, 6.5% of my income is allotted for vehicle maintenance and motorcycle fun. We'll see how well I stick to this.

According to my new budget,

Whats a budget???  ;D

Lets see, last year I spent approx $2500, this year I'm around $5k and the year isn't finished and neither is my build. So the answer is too much, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Don't get married mate, it's over rated, instead, spend your money on things that don't tell you what you can spend your money on..........  ;D

Oh, and I spend most of my money on my bikes, according to my wife..............  ::)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I'm finally at a stage that just maintenance and the occasional farkel are required so 2015 should be about 2%.

That's true you come to a point where there's not much left to do. Then go out a buy another and start that whole process over.

I've got 5 bikes on the road, so just registration, insurance, and maintenance keeps me poor. God help me when I finish all my other projects............ ;D

Less than zero. Ex problems ( >:() has had me selling lovely stuff and no projects are getting progressed.

And I'm getting older.

This year I bought a Karcher, a fcuk off big fridge, a bloody tumble drier, and all sorts of nonsense for the garden. And a load of poncy red cushions ffs.

If the RC30 gets too uncomfortable with your pooftie money spending habits, she can always come stay with my for a bit while she cools her temper  ;D ;D

I've stupidly been keeping track of all the $ on each bike... but if I had to venture a guess, I'd say that somewhere around 10-15% goes to motorcycles, and it's still not enough. At least not to get things done on the timeline that I want them done by.
