Brake pad choice?
« on: November 11, 2005, 12:52:22 AM »
I bought a set of DSS front pads(Vesrah) for my 76 F1, they were 8 pounds and were 'pattern parts' if you go to the 'genuine spares' front brake pads are 18.95, what is the difference? I am happy to pay more for the front pads, but should I be looking at EBC, Brembo, or any others?
Has anyone actually compared there DSS type pads to an EBC(or other) and noticed a significant improvement?
Which of the following are available and ideal for road use? organic, semi-metallic, ceramic, sintered.

Is it still too early for the US boys? I can't believe I haven't had a ton of advice on this subject! ;)

I haven't compared all those pads, but I run EBC HH+ pads in my BMW and they are great. That's what will be going into my 350F cafe project soon.

Jay,
Have you checked that the EBC HH+ is available and fits?

No, I haven't checked yet. I do know they are available for a wide range of bikes, I guess I'd be suprised if they didn't have them for these bikes.

I know EBC and Brembo are available, so I am told! but I do not know what types?: organic, semi-metallic, ceramic, sintered?
Also, are the Vesrah ones from DSS that I have already bought any good?

I've never tried the brands mentioned so far. I got a set of Bendix Motorcycle brake pads and they seem to work very well. (Just wanted to bring up another brand available...)

As the brakes on my bike are so crap! I wanted to get the very best pads that I could and I don't mind spending a few quid more for them.
Mick, how are the Ferodos? what did you use before?
jonesdp, what do you think of the Bendix, I have never heard of these.

Bendix has made automotive brake components for decades. I bought brake pads from Stiletto Cycle and they carry the Bendix brand. (In other words, I didn't specifically ask for that brand, but that's what I got) They seem to work well and I don't really have any issues with noise.

I was going to try pads first, then if that didn't help, braided hoses are next on the list! Pads are comparatively easy to fit, except my caliper doesn't have a bleed nipple?

Be careful with some of the more expensive pads.  Some of them are designed for racing applications and will actually be much less effective on a street bike because they will never get up to their optimum operating temperature.  I have the Vesrah brand on my 750 and they work fine.  I've even locked up the front wheel in an emergency stop before.

Gordon,
I agree, I wasn't looking for racing type pads as they require a lot of heat to function properly, I was going for a 'street' pad. Hence, trying ot hear about others experiences.
