Dual disk question. 76 CB550. People who really know...
« on: April 18, 2005, 06:22:28 PM »
This is what I have to work with, A 76 CB550 stock front end and I found a 76-77 GL1000 front end? I haven't bought the GL front end yet. Because I wasn't sure if it would work.
Now can I just swap the CL wheel w/both rotors and both calipers to my CB550 forks? Lets forget about hoses and master cylinders for now. Is it a straight swap? Or do I need the triple tree and fork tubes from the GL also? The Gl fork tubes look pitted, but the rest of the front end looks good.

Please responed only if you have done this or are dead sure it works from experiance. I've read too many posts about people who think they are sure.

There should be a seperate space for the 3-4 different ways to make a dual disc for different models. Also the Pros and Cons to each method.

Thank!

Nomad, the GL calipers are completly different from the 550, and can't bolt up directly to the 550 legs. The GL disk size and/or offset from the hub is different from the 550 also, so you can't use the GL wheel with dual 550 calipers. The GL fork tubes are larger diameter than the 550, so there's no way to swap the parts around that way either. The easiest way for dual disks on a 550 is to add anoter 550 caliper and disk.
I know others HAVE put GL front ends on 550's and 750's, but that's something I have no direct knowledge of.

Thanks, Chris

You maybe have saved me some cash. I've read that by just adding another 550 disc will work, but handels #$%*ty. I can be wrong about too!

It comes down to this. I'm looking for dual discs(better stopping power), but i wanna still have the vintage look(chrome rim/spoke wheels). I know I'm making a compromise by having spokes wheels and that mags w/duals are better/easier to find. But I also want the best setup I kind find/ get cheap! I have tools, knowledge and work space.

So what seems to be the top 3-4 setups people use? What does it take to do it? And what are the pro's and con's to these setups? Anyone?

P.S. Chris could you explain your setup alittle more? I have an extra set of CB 550 forks complete in my garage(Extra rotor and extra caliper, is that all I need?) I know it'll need a new hose setup and master cylinder etc. I'm more concerned with the front end dry build first.

Thanks, Nomad
