"flaking" side cover
« on: November 10, 2005, 06:59:41 PM »
As you can see from the attached picture, the right side cover decal on my 1979 CB650 seem to be “flaking” a bit and before I try to buy a new side cover (impossible) or a new decal for it (very difficult to find) I was wonder if some sort of clear coat might help hide the problem.

Any ideas or previous experience?

Thanks,
Scott

try www.davidsilverspares.co.uk for the panel and www.reproductiondecals.com for the decal

Once that sort of " flaking " begins , it is hard / impossibile to stop...

one thing that worked for me in the past is to wet sand with 1000 grit and then reclear. you could try 600 grit to start but be careful you don't want to burn through the decal where the clear has flaked. once you have the edges smoothed so they are not visible, have the local body shop shoot some clear over it. shoudl get you through another year.

Good idea, I think I'll try that.

Maybe I'll but another coat of clear on the other side cover too.

The David Silver link is great..be careful that you know where you're ordering from..that UK on the end of the URL is the tipoff...my painter said I had to get new sidepanels for my '76CB750, and I ended up ordering them online from CMS..they have everything...price 55.00 each..I was a newbie then and desparate for parts and 55.00 didn't seem horrible to me...then the charge hit the card! It was 55 EUROS! PLUS SHIPPING FROM THE NETHERLANDS! $180.00 U.S! (they now have a unit in North America)...to add insult to injury, a month later, I got my JC whitney catalogue...$29.95 each US! Shipping from Chicago to Michigan..but I got 'em, and they sure are purty, all painted up!
By the way, the painter said that the reason that they get fragile is that the solvent from the paint keeps eating at them over the years until they fall apart..he said he couldn't even sand mine without cracking.
