What kinda solvent you use to clean them?  Going to go pick some up tonight if not this weekend to clean mine.

Back in 69-71 time period, I was in the Navy stationed in Lemoore, CA.  I had a 305 Superhawk and I used to take weekend trips with the buds around California state.  A couple guys bought new 450 Hondas (both red).  These were pretty new bikes, and the only time there was ever any mechanical issue, was when the one guy took off his shirt while riding and the sleeve got caught in the chain at about 50-60 MPH.  I was behind him at the time, with the other 450 rider, you could see the whole fascinating incident unfold.  He had one sleeve still on when the chain grabbed the dangling sleeve and the shirt just sort of disappeared off him, whoosh.  Lot's of wobbling.  He managed to stay on the bike and skid off to the side of the road.  He said his arm was sore, and was pretty miffed at our laughter over the spectacle, normally seen only in cartoon events.  We helped him wrestle the bike onto the center stand, where he used the tool kit screwdriver, pliers, and a pocket knife to poke and cut the remains of his shirt wedged between chain and rear sprocket.  It took about 20-30 minutes.  I think it was the longest duration of maintenance time I ever witnessed on that bike.  I'm not sure, he may have had to readjust the chain tension, too.  We then rode off and his 450 returned to its normal reliable self.  Eventually, the 450 owner stopped grumbling about the incident, retold countless times.   However, on a later ride, he zoomed up to take leader of pack position, then pulled off the road to a clearing.  We all followed and parked behind him.  He casually got off the bike, removed his shirt and slowly bungeed it to the bike, then got back on and zoomed off down the road, leaving us standing next to our recently parked bikes.  He did make it easy for us to catch up to him, and then took position near the rear of the pack.  We were all surly in our own way.

Anyway, the 450s were always way faster than my 305, of course, and that earned a sneer or two at the "little" 305.  The 450 was a pretty comfortable bike to ride long distance, once you got used to the shaking.  Later I got a 650 BSA.  I don't think it shook as bad as the Honda 450, was faster, and ended all the "little bike" sneering.  The Honda was still more reliable and needed far less maintenance than the Beezer.

Cheers,
Lloyd... (SOHC4 #11 Original Mail List)

Well It was raining like hell last night so I had nothing extra to do.

So I placed the tank in the wash basin and tried to flush the nasty goo without too much elbow grease.

Everything that came out was neon green for the first 10-15 minutes or so and then little chunks started to appear. Hopefully after a few days of this it'll be clean enough to use a chemical stripper to get the rest out.

With that taken care of I moved on to electrical. Grabbed my test battery and jumpers and hooked the bike up. Turned the key and...

Boom we have neutral light and headlight.

Horn doesn't work but the brake and turnsignals do.
Based on the brackets in the front I suspect there was a fairing on the front of the bike. The front signals are missing as well.

So ok with that sorted I moved on to finger crossing and praying. And without a single dollar spent on parts here is my result...

I don't know what happened to the sound but I can assure you that it sounds pretty good for a bike that hasn't run in god knows how long.

I'm excited to silliness.  ;D ;D ;D

BTW, are those the sidecovers I see haplessly strewn about the floor? You know what happens to sidecovers so carelessly lying about mister? They get stepped on, that's what. :( :(

lol yea I think the conversion from my phone to the computer is messed up somehow. I'll borrow a digicam and see if that is better.

The side coveres were on the shelf and I took them off to get the filters back out. I can assure you they are in a safe place now.  ;)

Now, when you say it was "free" and you found it "by the side of the road", it didn't happen to have the keys in it with the seat still warm did it? I mean, exactly how quick was your get-away?

Sounds a little suspicious to me...

Oh yeah, nice bike (you might want to get it painted quick, I know a shop, Guiseppe's Paint and Pizza. They do a nice job, just don't ask about the plastic on the floor... )

Thanks joe!! Not the same bike but def what I was talking about.

Silly question but they are made to HAVE to have an oil cooler right? I'll run one regardless but I thought it was a requirement.

Anywhoo no progress as of today but I'm hoping to get it all put back together as soon as my petcock rebuild kit gets here and take it around the parking lot to see if she rides ok.

Hope I'm not jacking your thread here, but just found some photos of my '69 cl450 with the same paint as yours, pictures are not great, but these things really can look great. Good luck with your project.

Not a thread jack at all.

My paint looks like it was done by hand. Like someone painted OVER the existing stripes.

I'm fairly certain that the red/orange is the original color as I had to torch straight one of the balance tubes coming out of the tank. (it was plugged solid I had to drill it out)

When I burned through the paint some of it flaked off first and it was a sort of primer underneath.

The gold isnt a stripe at all but either really thick paint or a painted over stripe.

I don't want to mess with it too much until I get papers for it.
