What is the general consensus on this forum to be a so called "newbie"? Is it the number of posts or the time on the site?  ::)

Well, there's a "forum newbie", which is anybody new to the forums, and then there's a "sohc4 newbie" which is anybody new to sohc4's or bikes in general.

Total forum post count and total amount of time spent on a motorcycle doesn't necessarily mean a person isn't a newbie if they haven't actually learned anything from their experience.

Another dumb question.

What is the single nipple under each carburetor for? The PO had a plastic tube connected to it and it was just hanging off to the side with the tip burnt. I took it off and every once in awhile I notice a drop come out. Is this a major problem that needs fixing? My petcock doesn't fully seal shut and gas does leak out into the fuel line.

That's the overflow tube for the bowl.  If that carb has a problem with the float or needle valve, then the extra gas will flow out that barb instead of into your crank case.  A gas-safe tube should be connected to the barbs to carry the gas over the back of the engine, back by the swing arm.  Gas and a hot engine... well, you do the math!

Okay! I will get those hoses back on.

Do I need to wash a motorcycle differently than a car to prevent washing away valuable lubricants (like the chain for example)?

Yes I am serious

Wash and wax as normal, just apply chain lube once dry.  Running down the road 4 or 5 miles will dry the chain and heat it up some, making lubricant takeup more better.

You would like to try to limit the amount of detergent and water you get on the chain. Wet and rinse gently, you don;t want high pressure water working it;s way past gaskets. Sounds odd but a leaf blower does a great job drying the bike.

Oh one more thing, after you dry the bike, wipe down the chain and re lube it.
