cb 919 tank on a cb550f
« on: June 17, 2009, 12:09:21 PM »
I am going to try this project on for size.

My tank on my 550 is shot. Fuel is wicking through the side of the tank. I looked at a cb919 and saw they mount like the older CBs. So I bought one to test fit. It should be in soon.

This is my photoshop mock up.

This was when I bought it, before a few small mods.

What do you guys think? I wanted one of Benjie's tanks but the $$$ are not there.

How much can you get that 919 tank for?

I think it is going to be a lot bigger than what your photoshop mock up is....  When I sat on the 919 the tank seemed HUGE!  If I am mistaken on the size it does look cool.

I am not sure on the size. I am hoping for the best.

I got the tank for $100.

919 tank is freakin huge. Close to twice the size you've mocked up on your 550 there...
No.

According to http://www.motogrid.com/pages/newvehicles/viewspecs/25/37/421/2007/honda-919.aspx it's only got a 5 gallon capacity.

The 550 holds what 4.2? The 919 tank might not be that much bigger.

Interesting..  The 919 tank dose seem big.. Not sure about the 919 tank but aren't most new modern motorcycle tanks just a plastic cover with a tank underneath that's useally smaller then then the cover it self? Looks pretty cool good luck!

Looks like a nice way to breathe some modernism into the bike. Will be interesting to see if you can make this work.

It's phsically larger because of it's shape. It's much shallower, with a huge area underneath that is vacant for electrical and other goodies.

Did a little work sizing things up. This is a bit closer to proper size. Doesn't show that it's also about 4 inches wider than a 550 tank, though...

No.

Well it came in today. I will have to move the mounts just a little to get a good fit. Work on the seat has started.

Looks good so far, I like the way the curve ar the rear of the tank contours around the engine.  Are you thinking of a seat with a V-shaped cutout at the leading edge to fit around the tank?   Are there any issues with handlebar clearance?

My question, too - with a wider tank, it's bound to be more obstructive.

Here's a few more concerns I have after looking at a few of these tanks on eBay, is this a vented tank? What will you do for a petcock? and didn't this tank have a large opening at the bottom near the seat for a fuel pump?  Check the pics  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-CB-900-F-Hornet-919-Blue-2002-Gas-Tank-Used-1913_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ65Q3a12Q7c66Q3a2Q7c39Q3a1Q7c72Q3a1546Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem3a4fc7a66cQQitemZ250446587500QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

too bad jb does not seem to like gas tanks.

I like the look of that! i bet it would be nice on 750 too. Let us know your issues with the tank clearance and such.

Very cool, I'd like to see how this works out. I want to replace my tank eventually as I JB'd a ton of rust holes and POR-15'd it. It hasn't sprung a leak so far, but I feel like it's only a matter of time...

I will be tig weld the hole shut. This is a new tank so no danger of old gas.

It is vented and the hose from the old tank fit very nice.

I have a few petcocks in the shop I will try to fit one on this afternoon.

I will try to wrap the seat around the tank. I was thinking of a piece of metal on the front of the seat with truck bed coating, it would be black and it would grip real nice.

I will have to put some reliefs for the handle bars. It just touches the right hand controls. Maybe a 1/4 in would fix it. I figure a blanket and my large plastic body hammer will do it.

I don't mean this as an undercutting compliment, but I really did not expect it to look that good. Do the whole bike up and you'll have a really unique machine.

Hmmmmm....I want to see how it looks from above and the front.  That sucker has to be a lot wider....  More pics please!  Oh...and couldn't you maybe put risers on the bars instead of denting the tank?  It seems like dents would mess with the sharp lines of that tank.  It'll be interesting to see the finished product.

I wasn't so into the photochop mockup due to it looking puny.
I really dug mlinder's revamp.   8)

Seeing the new tank in the picture affirms my belief that these bikes are highly modifiable.
Nice vision and execution!
