550 Gas Tank Issues
« on: June 22, 2009, 04:20:22 PM »
So I'm sure I'll get the classic "Did you search?" and yes I did. I'm looking for some info on what other tanks fit my 74 CB550 because the original one, well, it kinda exploded a little bit. Just kinda. All I could find on here is how to clean out a tank. I know how to do that but now I no longer have a tank to clean out. It seems like its alot easier to find parts for the 750's and I'm wondering what I can do to make one fit, if there is anything to do. Will an early model year one fit?

+1, or just look in the For Sale section here.  Used 550 tanks are still pretty abundant.

Okay, now that that's out of the way, you can't say your tank exploded without providing details! ;D

Exact replacement ones would be the CB500 and Cb550 ones.  Different colors, of course.  75 and 76 K model tanks will work and have the same shape and fit, too.  However, they have a different style fuel tap fitting (and colors).

Thank you good sir. I'll keep my eyes open on the classifieds around here. I guess I have to tell the story now. The screws to take out the petcock were seized in the tank so we figured the best way to get them out was to heat them...with flame. This tank has been sitting for thirty years and we assumed all the explosive bits would be gone by now. Not so much it seems. There was at least three feet of flame coming out the bottom of the tank that came right between my buddy and I as we were leaning over it. Needless to say, I think I may own the largest CB550 gas tank in...the world. (In Jeremy Clarkson's voice, of course)

the must have been exciting!

Funny you should mention that. It was a little too exciting for my tastes actually. Especially since we were both leaning over the tank, trying to get out that bolt when it went up. The fireball in between our heads was interesting.
