Topic: Valve tappet feeler gauges

I've been trying to set the clearance on my cb750 which calls for .05 & .08mm. I am doing this by removing the caps to access the tappets. I have a set of feeler gauges but they are straight and I'm not having much luck getting them into the gap. I tried bending one of the blades and it broke. I have tried to find valve tappet gauges which are offset but the ones I find at the auto parts stores aren't thin enough. Any suggestions for a place to get the proper gauges? Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Are you sure you're using the correct thickness gauges?
.05mm is .002 inch, and .08mm is .003 inch. These are really thin and should flex into the tappet easily.
I did mine recently with no problems...

I've even trimmed them with scissors to make them narrower and then bent them slightly to fit under.

My feeler gauges bent just fine as well.  Though they were made in China.  All covered in cosmoline, ick.

I think I bought the same set.

I use straight feelers from napa or some other auto parts store...it takes a bit of practice and finesse to get them just right...keep trying they will work.

I had pretty good luck with the .08mm. It was the .05mm that I've been having trouble with. It's almost like paper. I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks for your response.

Actually it's thinner than most paper.
I'm basically with the other guys on this. Regular feeler gauges can ge used to measure these clearances if carefully worked into position. I have a "special (angled) Honda gauge" purchased from one of the mail order specialists for about $5 which I have never used.

Are you sure the cam is in the correct position for the cylinder you are checking ?

The rocker arm for the valve you are adjusting should be loose enough so that you can lift it a bit to get the guage started.

You might want to try the valve adjustment proceedure someone posted elsewhere on this site.

It makes perfect sense & not only works great, it takes only about 1/2 the time as the one from the Haynes manual.

I wish I knew about it back in 1978 when I bought my 750F2.
