Tires were tall back then probably a 90 to a 100 on the aspect ratio. A Goodyear AT, was a bit lower I think.

 When Yokokama came out with a 4.60 x18.. around 77, I think that was one of the first lower height tires I remember.. and that seemed wide.. ;D

 My buddy scared the crap outa me, when he installed one, me riding behind him.. he threw it over so hard and far I thought it would never hang on..graunched a lot of header when he did it.
 A while back 1080 picked up an old Jardine with the low outer pipe pushed 1/2 way in, I mean ground.. I said, I bet any money that is Ricks old pipe.. ;D

Rhino food for thought--->http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ton-up_Boys

Interesting write-up.  Thanks for the reference.

it's crap....that whole bit about alcohol and coffee at the end...someone was taking the piss with that one.

Not once does it mention that "cafe" racer" used to be a deragatory term for bikes dressed up like race bikes but didn't actually race (ie it was all for show on a street bike). Think most modern import cars (ie ricers).

The best description of "taking the piss" I ever heard was from a drunk scotsman I used to work with. He said:

"you know when you go to the bathroom and you write #$%* all over the walls while you are taking a piss, you know jokes and chicks phone numbers and stuff, well it is the same idea but with words".....

I still am not sure he meant to say what he said but if you think (drink) about it for a while it makes sense...
Sounds similar to "talking #$%*"
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

From what i learned in school is that the english had everything backwards, lucas electrical - positive grounds, weird
english slang, warm beer, a woman in charge, and crapy food. No wonder our fore fathers sent them back to England.
 ;D ;D ;D ;D

Not to get off topic (or maybe to get back to? ) , but a group of guys I rode with in Houston, TX had a more Philosophical aproach to the term "Ton Up".  It seems that the original Ton Up Boys were taking there machines that were underpowered and over weight and trying to get them to perform the best that they could.  So we used the term to mean "Do the best with what you have."

So how many take the piss at a ton or just plain piss the ton?
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.
