Will this dwell meter work? Ten dollar pawn shop find.
« on: June 19, 2009, 11:36:17 AM »
Just wondering if there's wondering if I need a specific type of meter, or if they're all the same?  I notice this one has 6 and 8 cylinder settings, but no 4.  Figured for 10 bucks I'd take a chance.

Ah yes. just noticed that.  You double the values for the 8 cyl reading.  Excellent, well, hopefully it works at all.  Thanks guys.

It will "work".  But, the scale isn't calibrated for the SOHC4 ignition system.   Get new points and gap them perfectly.  Mark the needle position for those points on the scale.  Thereafter, use that marked position to set whatever point set you have installed.

Aw man, I knew it couldn't be that easy.  How would the meter differ if it was calibrated for SOHC TT?  Or is that the only way to calibrate any meter?

No meter is "calibrated" for the sohc however it really doesnt need to be. In the manual you will find a min/max dwell. the longer the dwell, the more the coils can potentially charge. Make sure the points are in good shape and gapped ok, from there, fire the bike up and run it a bit to warm it up some and hook things up according to the booklet.
I would probably keep it slightly under the max.

What? Name one meter, other than maybe a specialized honda meter(if there even is one) that is calibrated for the sohc. usually you just hook up a meter and go. I did for get that you have to halve the reading if I remember correctly to compensate for the system firing as if it were a 2 cylinder.

besides, you really dont calibrate anything. You get a base reading and try to use that as a reference.
not that I have to worry about this as I ditched points.
