Topic: 73 350f starting problems

I recently started renewing my 73 350f starting with rebuilding the carbs and cleaning them.  Float height at 21 mm, air screws 1 turn out.  Upon starting a cold engine in the morning is a chore.  It hits and misses and almost starts, then finally it catches and runs.  After the initial problem starting the bike it starts good all day firing up immediately.  It runs strong once started.  I get the impression that it is not getting enough gas when it is hard to start but that is the only time it does that.  Also it has an inline fuel filter on it.  Any help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

See if all the pipes are getting hot when you start it.  I couldn't believe what a difference a quarter turn could make on the idle circuit.

Check that the choke lever when it is turned on full, actuates the throttle a bit.  There is a cam with adjusting screw buried under the tank in front of the carbs that will set that point.  It should be fully off when the choke is off, but progressively advance the throttle a bit as the choke is applied.  You can see the throttle grip turn a bit if you put the choke onto full.  Without this advancement of the throttle, it will make start-up from cold more difficult.

Also make sure the choke butterflies are closing fully.  Do you always turn the fuel off before the bike sits for long periods?  If not, could it be flooded from one or more of the float seats leaking through (note....excess fuel should come out the bowl overflow tubes provided they are functioning properly in the case of a leak-through)
