Market questions.
« on: July 05, 2009, 07:23:51 PM »
Hey all.

My motorcycling interests are starting to shift and I'm considering thinning the fleet some to make some room.  Wondering about the market, (in general, not just SOHC Honda).  I imagine it's pretty soft now, so it would probably be best to wait a year, or a few years to sell.

Thoughts?

I think it's a mixed market and depends on what you have to sell. If you have something special to sell there are people out there who will buy because they still have the do-re-mi and a passion for the product. And what the heck, if you don't have to sell, you don't have anything to loose by testing the waters. Actually, it's a good place to be for a seller.

I've got my house for sale and that's my attitude. I don't have to sell, but would like to. If I get an offer I can accept, great, if not, it's still a great house. Can always try again next year.

Hmmm, seems to me that in the past year or so vintage Honda prices have gone up a little bit. Might be due to the high gas prices a few months back and that discovery channel "world's greatest motorcycles" show ranking the CB750 at #5. Also it seems that cafe racers have become the new fixed gear and carry alot more hipster cred these days. Pretty sure I remember seeing a cb160 cafe in an Usher video. Interest in vintage Japanese/Italian basically anything but HD) bikes in general is approaching some kind of tipping point I think.

To make a maybe not so relevant analogy vintage Moog synthesizers have always had high prices but they shot through the roof after the release of the Moog documentary, the new minimoog etc. etc. ARP's, though to some people's ears better sounding, and definitely more flexible have always lagged behind pricewise until about 3 years ago. I bought an ARP odyssey in 04 for $400 and sold it in 07 for $1100. Still regret selling it.

IMO, whatever that's worth, I think the classic bikes won't loose any valve in this market - the're still bargains.  It's the higher priced bikes that won't sell.  Heck, my local Harley dealer is sub-leasing out half his building.
1975 750 K5 Original owner -  11K miles.  On the road 8/09 after 26 years in storage.
2004 Harley Superglide - bought new
1973 Honda CL350 - sold in '75 to buy the "750"
