« on: July 06, 2009, 01:33:40 PM »
I want to paint the front fender of my CB750. Whats the best way to prep it for paint? Sandblast or just scuff it up? thanks.

I painted my 550 fenders this past spring. I cleaned them, scuffed them up real good, and then used adhesion promoter, by duplicolor. (bought it at advance auto) it is specifically made for chrome. It is a clear primer, and has worked well for me, although it's only been a few months.

I searched google while I was trying to paint mine, and some people suggested using an acid to eat away the chrome. I believe the works, toilet cleaner, was suggested. I just used a wire brush, sanded it for a long time, used the adhesion promoter, then sprayed on a few layers of good old rustoleum. After wet sanding them with 1500 and a good buff job, both front and back look flawless.

Just make sure you wear down all the shiny to a dull with paper before painting.

Some people say it will not last, others say this method lasted for years with no peeling. Only time will tell ;D

Good luck

I was planning on painting my front fender also. I work with a guy who has a body shop and he suggested just scuffing up the chrome a bit and using a good primer but not removing the chrome if its in good condition and not peeling.  That adhesion promoter might be a good idea also I'll have to look into that.
