magna vf750---are the v-4's good engines---
« on: June 11, 2009, 07:15:25 AM »
I am looking at a couple of these as prices seem pretty good for late 90's models. Is this a good engine as far a longevity and performance  I considering  parking one of these next to the cb650. 1995-2000 honda magna v-4 engines.

The v4 engines are awesom. The 90s model magnas could easily keep paces with the Valkyrie bikes. They like to rev like any other 4 cylinder.

The early Honda V-4's had issues, but Honda fixed the design in the late 80's.  I suggest a search for groups and forums specific to that bike, you'll learn a ton.  Try not to compare forum communities to SOHC4 though, there is nothing quite like these forums for other bikes (please feel free to enlighten me if anyone knows of others besides Thumpertalk and ADVrider)

I had a '94 Magna and liked it a lot!  Had about 27K miles when I sold it (which I sort of regret) and no problems other than routine maintenance.  The best thing was being totally underestimated by other guys I rode with.  I was able to smoke pretty much any other cruiser that I came accross.

V-65 Sabre.  One of the bikes I salivated over as a teenager.  Hope to have one someday.

Removing/replacing carbs (on the later models especially) is a real adventure. Try synching them with normal hand tools. ;) ::)

I currently have a 96 VF 750 CD Magna and I can tell you that the engine is awesome. In fact, a little scary. This bike stock will run with and even beat a Valkyrie. I decided to try for a Little better gas mileage so I dropped 4 teeth on rear sprocket. Didn't notice THAT much loss of torque. 1st gear 55mph @ redline, 2nd 90mph, scared to take third to redline. 5th at 3.8k = 75mph. Redline=9600

The Magna should NEVER have been retired from production. can't say enough nice things about!

I have wanted to get either the 83 v65 magna or 84 sabre. Those bikes are still fast even today.

Had a 99 Magna.  Loved it.  Thinking about getting one again.  Great bike can be whatever you want.  Absoloutely reliable.  Motor was a monster.  I changed the exhaust and jetting.  Even more of a monster!!!

I was a member of the Magna Riders Association.  They had a very active community and website but it seems things have slowed considerably.  Check it out here:

http://www.magnariders.com/

Lots of good info about the magna on that website.

When to their national meet in 01.  Great group of people sort of like here.

Here's a few pics of my bike.

My old 1982 Sabre
Don Vesco Rabid Transit, Supertrapp, Fox, Krausers, K&N, carb work, etc
6th gear at redline = 155 mph, couldn't quite pull that, but I'd wind it out in 5th past redline on a loooong mountain downhill, drop it in 6 and hit 150+ more than a few times....riding 2 up.

I'll echo what most have said.  I had a 2000 Magna that I loved.  Sold it at 30k and it wasn't using a drop of oil, no ticks, no problems other than maintenance.  I actually sold it to finance my first CB750 chopper and I missed it ever since.  I just picked up a gorgeous '94 magna, black just like my first one, with only 11k on it for $2400 and it still puts a huge grin on my face when I ride it.  If you do go with the Magna, first thing to change is the stock seat.

That is a great price !  Check to see if it is a vf750c or vf750cd...I would jump on it and I'll bet you wont be dissapointed after you ride it. Condition..... bike has never been dropped and that sort of thing.

Bikini fairing, shocks, and some trim stuff, but only about 3 out of 100 are cd's so they get a little more value.
