5.5" wheel fit w/ 78 750 swingarm or 81+ dohc swingarm ??
« on: June 22, 2009, 07:10:39 AM »
I have this crazy idea of putting harley fatboy rims on my 550 project bike.  I'm currently building a carbon fiber tank / cafe seat, I've shaved off all the tabs and deleted uneeded portions of the frame, and I am fitting a modern sportbike front end on the bike.  A local guy has a set (front and rear) for $150 and I am toying with the idea of picking them up and seeing if they will work.

some questions?

Is this a stupid idea?

Does anyone know if a 5.5" x 16" rim will clear a 78 750 swingarm or a 81+ dohc swingarm?

If it does clear will I be able to get an offset sprocket to work or will it be too offset to bring into spec?

since you asked, Yes it's a stupid idea, but it's your bike and it's about individuality so go for it.

I believe the folks to ask are on the chopper boards.

Google Honda Chopper forum.

forgot to mention the rear would be a 160 tire (wheels come with brand new tires).  I know tire clearance wise a 150 will fit with a 78 750 swingarm, just not sure about sprocket / offset.  I'm thinking about just buying the wheels/tires and giving it a go since they are pretty cheap.

It can be done, but expect on the short side to have to widen your swingarm.

Best to be prepared for the worst.

Either that or you could always do a swingarm swap. Or hard tail.
