centering rear wheel cb750 1977
« on: June 20, 2009, 07:57:05 PM »
OK, this maybe weird but ; the bike runs out well- I've had it for years and put thousands of miles on . I put new wheel bearings  and chain and sprockets and tires and all is assembled correctly and works.  I thought I would put lowering shocks on to reduce the seat height by 2 inches. Once the shocks were installed and inspected the tire was dangerously close to the right side frame under the seat by the turn signal bolt and had plenty of room by the left side. Has anyone seen this before or is this normal?
The swing arm bushings seem normal.

it may be un-centered hard to tell without a pic.  That part of the frame is bendable, so it could be out of wack. Just worry if it is  centered in the swingarm, and the sprockets are aligned

i'm pretty sure that the frame isn't actually symmetrical across the center line on that bike... i don't know if it would be dangerously close, but i'm pretty sure it will be more one side than the other

Don't know if your setup is "normal" or not without pics but there are some asymmetries in the stock setup (at least on the late 630 chained bikes)  Look at the upper mounts for the shocks and you will notice that one sticks out farther from the frame rail than the other (I believe it is the left one)  Also, if you carefully measure the distances of the rear hub from the left and right swingarm forks that the dimensions are slightly different.  What does all this mean?  Well, I believe that the swing arm itself (at least at the forks in the rear) is actually shifted slightly to one side and then the rear wheel is actually shifted back the other way in the swingarm bringing it back in line with the center line of the bike.  Why did Honda do this?  Perhaps it was done to help with chain clearance??  I don't have an earlier bike on hand to see if there are similar oddities . . . .
