Starbucks is sludge.

They over roast all of their beans because it burns out the flavor of lower quality beans.  There is no way to have really good quality control when you do that much volume, you can't be really choosy with the beans. if ya know what I mean.

Hell i think Folgers tastes better than most Starbucks coffee.

I know that there is a lot of people that are absolutely stark raving mad about Starbucks......... to each his own cup of (tea)....... but I feel that Starbucks is the most overpriced asphalt sludge there is in the entire world.........

Besides, in my case it does make a difference, they give hundreds of thousands of dollars to a political fund that I absolutely can not and will not embrace.

I love Chai tea.

Bud damn you don't even order all of it in Italian.  A small is called "tall" (doesn't tall mean large)  a medium is called "grande" (that means large as well) and the large is called "Venti" which is Italian for 20.  Some of their larges are 20oz, but some are 24 and some are smaller depending on the drink you order, so none of it makes any damn sense.  The 2 smaller drinks are both called large and the large one gets a number?  ??? WTF?

They did that on purpose so that when people who are used to only going to Starbucks try out a real coffee shop, they get confused by the sizes and ordering process and feel out of place, and then go back to Starbucks because the real world is just too confusing.  It was a brilliant strategy that has paid off well for them.

They did the same thing with the macchiato.  A true macchiato is just a shot of espresso with a dollop of foam on top.  What Starbucks calls a macchiato is really a caramel flavored latte.  A much larger, very sweet drink.  So when a Starbucks customer goes into a real cafe and orders a macchiato and they get a demitasse with one shot with a cap of foam, they think they're getting ripped off and probably don't like the taste of it, either.

I can't even count the number of college chicks I served a macchiato to back in Austin who scoffed at the drink I handed to them and asked "what's this?".

I love Chai tea.

I can't stand coffee, but I love a good cup of Chai. I used to live a few blocks from a small local coffeeshop and everytime I'd meet a friend there I'd get some Chai.

It's unbelievable how much people pay for Starbucks coffee.  I also think it'd be funny if they started forcing them to put nutrition facts on their drinks.  I wonder how many people would blow a gasket when they find out that the large white chocolate mochachinodoublelattemachiattocappachino with cream and carmel on top that they drink every morning is like 500 calories and 20 grams of fat.

You could consider roasting your own.  You need an air popcorn popper and a source of green beans.  If you have a local roaster, they may sell to you otherwise there are several places on the web.  Green runs between $4 and $7 / lb.

i second that. lived with a group of people and there was a constant need for coffee and our answer was a popcorn popper. u can get super quality green beans if not the most expensive #$%* for the price it would be to get an average bean. Then you get to experiment with how dark u like your roast... super duper easy. plus it makes ur house smell awesome.

The air popcorn popper is how I roast the beans at my buddies house.  I usually like to go till just after the second crack.

quote from Uncle Ernie
When I lived in SF, I pretty much made Farley's my office.  Always a good bike show in front, and the baristas were all women who rode and had a lot of good tats.  One day a guy come up and asked for a latte, "...do you have skim milk?"
Instantaneous and total silence struck as every head slowly rotated to see who the dummy was.  A mouse fart would have sounded like a sonic boom as everyone waited.  Finally, the dumb-struck woman behind the counter was able to collect herself and murmered a steady, terse, "No."

That is what I won't tolerate.  Attitude from some "barista", tats or not who is barely one step above a McDonalds server.  I don't know where they come across this attitude that I have seen more than once.  Give me "What can I get you" or " How can I help you" without the snobby attitude or I won't be back.

I am much more a tea drinker but when I do have coffee it's 100% Kona.  My wife and I both have relatives in Hawaii that we visit every few years.  Mine is retired Navy so through her we have access to the commissary and the coffee is much cheaper than store price.  Last time we were there we brought back 20 lbs which mostly went on to friends and relatives.  I kept about 3 lbs. for myself.  My wife's cousin lives on the Big Island and has several acres that he has recently planted in coffee, bananas, and papayas among "other" things. ;)  So we will have to try some "homegrown" next time.
