Okay, crazy electrical question....
« on: June 21, 2009, 06:38:02 PM »
So, I have run into some PO woes with my 75 CB550F.  In the right handlebar control pod, There are 3 wires cut off (starter button is missing).  Yellow-red, black-red, and black.

And then, in the electrical box under the fuel tank, I have 2 blacks cut, along with 2 black-reds cut, ALL of them are twisted together.  And then, the yellow-red wire there is just cut right off.  This sounds like it's starting to get complicated.  Crap.

Any suggestions?  Where the hell is that black-red wire supposed to be?  I can't find it anywhere in the wiring schematic.  The schematic shows a green-red going into the starter switch, and then a yellow-red coming out....why are there 3 for me?

The black red is a headlight power wire.  The original starter switch put power from black onto black red, unless it was pushed, which then routed black onto the Yel/Red to make the starter solenoid trigger.  This way the headlight load is turned off during start operation, allow a higher voltage to the ignition coils.
The original switch likely disintegrated and the owner was too cheap to buy a replacement, then thought himself clever enough the hack the wiring enough to make the bike "work".  Selling his FU to the next bike buyer.

The Black/red, routes to/from the Headlight fuse normally.

The schematic you are using is for an earlier non-F model bike.  Maybe a 74.  Find the correct wire diagram for you bike in the Honda shop manual supplements, available for download elsewhere on this site.  That should help you correct PO "improvements".

Thanks you very much for that piece of advice.  I now see that signal buzzer is disconnected, as well.  Missing, actually.

Another question:  I have a disconnected orange wire at the electrical box below the fuel tank.....having a hard time find just an orange wire on the diagrams.  I'm new to these wiring diagrams.  The only one that I can see is for the blinkers, and  only 3 blink.  The front two are on all of the time, the back two aren't.  The front right one also blinks, the front left does not.  The problem being, I cannot find a wire to hook into that disconnected orange one, there is no counterpart (male orange) that I can see in the electrical box under the fuel tank.

I also have a Green (ground?) that isn't connected to anything....

This wiring stuff sucks.  Grr.

There will be a mate for that orange wire somewhere as its a blinker wire, unless the PO "spliced" in a bit of orange from somewhere, where does the one you have come from? (Not just in the box please).

Green is ground and commonly you get "Extras"
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Orange wires are blinker power, left side. Some of the female connectors take more than one male connection.  The fronts have running lights too,  Either Orange/wht or Blue/wht.  The front signals are supposed to be dual filament bulbs, 1034.  The rears 1073 single filament.

Green wires are frame ground.  And, rather important for making the signals behave correctly.
