CB 400/4 headlamp/ indicator frame
« on: June 16, 2009, 06:00:25 AM »
Hello,

I've got a basket case headlamp assembly on my 400/4 resto I need to replace, chrome ring rusted through, headlamp casing lugs split.
I've just started stripping the headlamp/instrument mounting bar (the one which has indicators on the ends of it - indicators which I don't have and need to get also!)
It looks to me like the legs and mounting brackets on this frame - which attach to the headlamp casing are bent out of true. Certainly the triangular brackets look to have been bent this way and that.

My question - should I be thinking to try and straighten, re-align the headlamp/indicator frame? How would I go about this? (novice ahoy) or simply acquire a replacement? (I've noticed one on a 400 four being broken which has the indicators I need also).

Thx,
Ewan

From Memory the brackets aint straight but if you can get the frame and indicators cheep enough go for it
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Hi Bryan,

Thanks for the info - I've attached a couple of pictures, I'd like to keep original bits if I can but since (not in photo) brake lever is sheared I'm thinking headlamp area has had an 'impact' as they say.

In main photo one leg seems bent more than other, and brackets look like they've been bent this way and that over time.
Had a look at another 400/4 and as far as could tell 'legs' were bent same amount each and brackets were straight?
Or does this look about right!?! lol my naiveity knows no bounds..

Just bend 'em to what will fit the mounting points, those are much less likely to have been moved - if they are you will have bigger problems than a wonky light mount.

Take all the bits off the front of the bike. (I know, you did that already.)  Put the wheel straight ahead and try to fit the frame to the mounts - note where it does not fit, and in which direction (if any) it is crooked.  Take the frame to a medium size vice, and bend it to suit.  You'll have to fiddle around with deciding which part of the frame to grab with the vice, and what to push on, but it's mild steel and you are going to paint it anyway, so you can go through the grab-bend-fit-check cycle quite a few times.

Yes the ears should be flat - do them with a hammer on the flat at the back of the vice.

I just went through this as I had to bend the ears outwards to fit a 750 headlamp shell; had to soften and re-mould the shell to get it to fit under the keylock and in front of the bottom bar, but I now have a bigger headlamp with that cool clear lens from ebay.

Thanks for the info - I'll certainly give it a go - matching lighting frame back to frame (were separated when I got) and bend back to shape.
I've got a good size vice I can flatten the lugs on too.

Great to see step by step info - really helps someone like me who hasn't much experience ;)
