77 CB 550 Filter element "?"
« on: June 22, 2009, 11:53:52 AM »
So I just got a 550...and the filter element not the filter that part that is under the filter that sits on the plate with holes in on the bottom of the air box.

I tried to order one on motogrid but they said no and Honda discontinued it.

So question is can I run with out it? Or is there a subsitute I can use?  Or another place I can order it from?

Thanks

The breather element fixture helps keep the paper filter element form getting oil vapors and clogging it up.  The paper can't really be cleaned effectively, so it must be replaced.

You can run without it.  But ,you'll be replacing filters a lot more often.

Lot's of people throw those away when they convert to pods.  Maybe someone will offer theirs.

You might try Westernhills Honda?  Might have in-house stock. Have you looked in the FAQ for parts suppliers?

I more just didn't understand it's function so thanks for clearing that up for me.
I have not checked out every place on the Faq so I will do that now.

I'm not ready to go for pods yet...that will be down the road.

To be clear... I am NOT recommending Pods.

Few people actually enjoy the steep learning curve of rejetting/tuning carbs rather than riding the bike.

"I have heard" that pods are more trouble then just the stock air box!  Now again I am new to Honda's so I am open to discussion.

The filter element in the bottom of my airbox was junk, too.  I decided to make my own.  I took a green Scotchbrite pad, cut two squares to size & held it down with the stock steel piece ("cover, air cleaner element" on microfiche).  I'm running a UNI foam style filter so it's tough to tell how much, if any, oil is passing through my setup, but I'll pull the filter out tomorrow and report.  I've run about 700 miles on it so far this year with this setup.
