1st try at starting the 750 since 1983 and ........
« on: June 21, 2009, 01:01:10 PM »
Good news and bad new - the carbs don't leak after the rebuild but the starter crapped out or maybe the solonoid?  The bike has been stored since 1983.  Rebuilt the carbs and went over all the connections - or at least all those I could see.  Sprayed terminal connections spray and put the dielectric lube on.  Flushed tank out and it was clean - put in new gas (cleaned strainer previously).  It's got a new, fully charged battery.  It cranked but didn't start.  Didn't overdue the cranking.  Tried about 4 times.  On the 5th (or so) try, I just heard the dratted "click."  Ok, so now what ???.  I was going to pull the starter out since I have new brushes but it looks like I have to take the cam adjuster off - and maybe the carbs -I really hope not.  Battery connections are tight and I cleaned them up before the restart try.  Oh, can I get a hint of where the heck the solonoid is?  Thanks, Fred.

ps.  points were put in shortly before storage - I dragged a piece of 1000 grit between them.  I cleaned an regapped the plugs.  Figured after it started, I put new plugs, points and condensors in.  And I did try with the kick starter to no avail :o.

First on your starter....

1) You may have just drained the batt way down. Put it on a charger and try again. Leave the lights off when starting too.

2 ) If it sat that long there may be carbon build up on the brushes. Not sure if they are removable on these starters but
cleaning them and the commutator would clear that. Often brings "dead" starters back to life.

On your bike...

1) Run thru the standard fuel-spark-etc tests. Make sure you have fuel in the carbs. MAke sure you have spark at the plugs.

2) Try some starting fluid in the airbox. Some popping will help get her going, and if it fires with starting fluid then fuel flow is your problem.

Thanks JM for your reply.  On #1, I did that but I did get her started using the kick start.  Problem was, I needed a bit of throttle - mighta even have started with the electric start if I had dun that.  Guess I'm use to fuel injection where you don't give it gas.  I'm thinking a wire to the starter maybe came off.  I have to look for a diagram of the wiring behind the headlight cause there is a "free" male black wire and a connector that looks like maybe it came out.  Maybe I didn't push it in enough when I cleaned and lubed it??  Thanks again.
