750 K5 Original owner
« on: June 23, 2009, 01:37:35 pm »
I bought this bike in 1/75 and ran it steadily until 1979, then very little until 1983.  Pulled it out of mothballs recently and want to get it on the road by mid-July.  I'm having problems with the electric start and hope to sort that out soon.  I got it kick started over the weekend but need to get a few other things done before I even do a ride around the block.  I have the side covers but had them off for these photos.  I polished the L/S muffler but didn't do the right side yet.

Always liked the K5 and that planet blue.  How is the battery?  Was is stored with the carbs drained?

Hey John,

New battery and I did the carbs 4 years ago but left the project.   The carbs needed a good cleaning and didn't leak after the install.  I need tires, cables, brake lines, rebuild the front caliper and that's about it.  Oh, and a change of fork oil.  I probably had the carbs drained but there was still varnish I had to get out.

I bet she runs like new when you get her done too!!!  One owner bike...nice.  You will get some lookers when you get that back on the road.  I almost bought a planet blue here in WI a year ago.  Ended up with a gold K1 which was another I could not get out of my head.  Are you going with new OEM exhaust?  Nothing like the sound of the HM 4 into 4 units.  Tell your wife, "one time buy dear."  ;D

Worked for me in that there were no leaks.  All the parts were there.  I haven't had the bike on the road so really don't know how it runs at speed.  Seems to run well at 2-3K revs sitting still though ;D.

Those new OEM units gotta be well over a grand, no?  My originals got holy by the 4th or 5 year.  I wanted Kerkers back them but I was kinda cheap.

Well, your bike came with the HM341's and I have seen those for about $1,000.  But I saw a guy on this board a couple weeks ago who said he got them for around $800.  I would be leery to buy any used exhaust and would stick to the new...especially if you are going to sell it to me someday... ;D

Completed my checklist:
Carbs rebuilt - did get a piss out the overflow but it stopped :P
Gone thru all electrical connections
New starter brushes but starter still doesn't work
Filled the 27 yo tires with air
Chain slack set at 3/4"
Changed the fork oil
New NGK's gapped at .025
1/4" cut from the ends of plug wires and ends reattached
Valves done - exhaust were good, 2 intakes were a little loose
400 grit paper pulled thru points - I'll put new ones in later (I have 'em)
New fuel lines - got the routing right the 2nd time
New bulb needed on rear tail light
Dropped pan, cleaned oil screen
Oil and filter change
New battery (of course)
Probably some other stuff I can't think of right now.

With 27 yo tires, no front brake (caliper off -still need to rebuild), and a 27 yo license plate I couldn't go too far or ride too fast.  I didn't get out of 2nd gear and didn't go over 4K revs - BUT MAN, DID I HAVE FUN RIDING AROUND THE BLOCK. ;D

Don't forget to grease the swing arm if there is a zerk on the K5?  That starter issue may be a corroded solenoid under the left side cover.  Might want to give it a look see.

Hey John,

did the 2 zerks, that was some of those things I forgot to list, but did do!

I took the solonoid off but even after taking the 2 screws out that appeared to hold it together, it didn't come apart.  They shouldn't be too much??  Just maybe should pick one up and see what happens.  Thanks,

I believe it is the hondaman that has a nice post about how to clean the solenoid in the FAQ section.  I was trying to locate it the other day.
