What's the deal with the seat latch on a '71 750K1?
« on: June 27, 2009, 05:07:09 am »
I'm finishing up a restoration on my 750K1 and I'm getting to the point where I have to deal with a missing seat latch. I have a couple other smaller Honda's(CB450,CB350F) of the same era in line to be restored and they all have seat latches that are welded to the frame. The thing is I don't see any signs that there was ever any latch welded to this frame. Is it possible the K1 had a bolt on latch. I know the K0's and K1's had a slightly different seat hinge locations than the K2's on up, so I'm guessing there was a different seat latch arrangement as well. I've looked through my shopmanual and my clymer manual and can't find anything. Can anyone enlighten me? A pic would be helpful. As always, thanks. ???
Will some tell me where the gosh darn kill switch is!!!

My 72 has a bolt on seat latch, don't know about the 71.

BikeBandit has the schematic that will show you.

The early ones have a "Hook" not a plunger and the whole catch assembly bolts to the frame
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

err ahduh, I don't know why I didn't think of bike bandit. Yep, just checked it out. So it looks like they didn't have any lock, just simply a push down on the seat, push the button to release the latch type arrangement, right?

Right, no lock at all, but it's more of a "pull on the slider to release the latch" type if arrangement :)

You can retrofit the K3-K6 locking latch, it bolts right up.

Here is a pic of my 1970 K1 with a build date of 9/70.  Picture of the latch with the seat down and one with the seat up.  Click on the pic to enlarge.  Hope it helps...

That's great! thx for the pics and info...so that's where that ground wire goes. Anyone know where I can get a latch set up? Haven't seen this type on ebay and none of the parts are still available through Bikebandit and othe similar sites.

I see Yamiya has one for $92...yikes.  Here is the link below:

For that price I would watch eBay.  There is a guy on there now parting a K1.  Maybe you can get it from him.

This stuff comes up on eBay periodically.  I scored a NOS hook and also a NOS plunger a few months back.
