What's your price range?

ACAP (as cheap as possible).   ;D

Hmmm... I'm only a student now (so officially unemployed/between jobs, with little income).  I should be getting the Ph.D. near the end of the summer.  And I think I have a job lined up, but it's not 100% and I still don't know the salary.  I have some cash in the bank, and it's enough to buy new, but I didn't save that much by spending unwisely.

Is it possible to get one for around $2k?  I know it sounds cheap, but I'm not looking for a mint bike.  (I suppose I could browse craigslist - which I'll do here pretty soon.)

If you are going to buy a sportbike just sack up and buy the 1000cc.
I have like 5 buddies of mine who all bought smaller (600cc) bikes and within a year traded upto liter bikes.

Just becasue the bike makes the power doesnt mean you have to use it..

Crap, my (now prosolars) kz650, with stacks and 4 into 1, and one tooth smaller front sprocket, would have made that Heritage look like it was standing still. For, like, a grand and a half completely finished (outside of cosmetics).

I mean, yeah, seriously, just about any god damned bike will do this.

I know you want him to be wowed, but you are gonna buy a bike for 6 grand that you won't like riding as much as your CB's and is gonna cost you a metric fsckton in insurance.
No.

This is a good point.

On the other hand, I really baby the CB.  Like... I don't even like to let it sit out in the sun, let alone ride it in the rain.  I'd like to have a bike that I don't care so much about.  And it might as well be fast.   ;D

So how much is insurance?

depends on your age but I've heard as much as 200+ per month

I'm currently paying 36 per month for my 750 with a horrendous documented speeding speeding habit.

do you ride a 1k?

Soi, do what you want man. Get a bike you are comfortable on. Pro's opinion that the 1k is worth it differs from my opinion that it is too much for probably either of us. If you don't have the skill for it, you'll get in trouble, easily. Just because his buddies traded in for 1ks doesn't mean they were ready for them.

I just recently bought a second bike (not too expensive) partly so I could baby the CB even more and partly so I could ride something different sometimes.

Mine is an SV-650 there's tons of them around, there pretty cheap/reliable/fast enough (too embarrass a Harley)/comfortable.

On the other hand, it's only got about one-tenth the class of the CB.

Age plays a big part but my turbo was only $76 a month for full coverage and an agreed amount. And that would kill almost any 1000cc bike.

s2r makes 87hp. R1 makes 178. s2r is not quite a litre sportbike.

You can buy almost any mid-late 90's 600 to 750 class rocket for 2-4 grand. In decent shape and be able to beat on it for daily trips.

Liter bikes are usually a little more $$ when bought used only because more aftermarket stuff is the norm.

One thing to keep in mind, more often than not if it has a lot of aftermarket stuff on it the PO can bull#$%* you all he wants..... He rode it hard and put it away wet.

I'd be willing to sell you my XS850 for $1200. That'd kill that poor Heritage.  :D

Go back and look at what I posted.
I have a S2R1K which is a 1000cc air cooled Monster.
Only reason I didnt buy the S4R1K is I wanted something clean that I could chopup, and those sportbike radiators (on liquid cooled bikes) kill me. I am not saying my Monster is as fast as say a new R1, but it is a liter bike and is more than fast enough for me.

All I was saying is for the cost difference of say a 600 Vs. a 1000cc bike you might as well go bigger up front. Becasue 9 times outta 10 you are going to get bored with the power and want to trade up anyways. Just go to a local dealership and see how many of the smaller CC bikes are in the used bikes section...

Fair enough.

This thread got really fast and furious, not like that horrible movie though.

To be honest not that much.
The bike was around 10ish out the door (bought brand new in the fall of 06).
Basically I removed all the stock stuff (chain guard/stickers/reflectors/)etc, traded the handlebars for clip-on's so I could lane split easier, cleaned up some wiring, removed the stock "tail" and the front fender, lowered the bike about 2 1/2'' from stock, lowered the gauges 2'' to get a lower "profile" to the bike, etc..The biggest visual thing I did was tear down the bike and powdercoat a bunch of stuff black (to match the frame). Did the swingarm, fork tubes, triple trees, rearsets, rear spring, etc. Biggest/more costly "mod" was the exhaust (rather not say how much I dumped on that :o). But, it does make the bike sound like a HD on crack...

SV650s are fun.  Small enough to throw around and enough torque to make you smile.

They may even be listed as a 'standard bike' by insurance companies (read, cheaper).  The Bandits are another one that are easy on the insurance pocketbook.

On your budget, find yourself a beater with bad plastics.  Trash the tupperware to save weight.  I bought this for $650.  I've got a little over 2K into it after some maintenance and tuning.  140+ HP with the flatslide carbs.  +2 teeth on the rear sprocket and -1 on the front.  Never ridden a Harley, but I think it's got 'em covered.
