1975 cb550f Carb issues again...
« on: June 25, 2009, 11:24:00 AM »
Hello, im dealing with an issue with my carbs from a stock 1975 cb550f with stock 4 into 1 exhaust.
the bike was parked for years, so i throughly cleaned the carbs and added k&n 3 inch round filters in place of the ruined stock air box.
Now the bike starts and idles great but bogs down at higher rpm's.  Any suggestions please, i would really appreciate it...

Find another stock air box, unless you really feel like getting to know your carbs and how jetting works better than you ever thought you would.  Pods are not an easy, bolt-on replacement for the air box.

Your next task is to type the word "pods" into the search field at the top right of the main forum page.  Come up for air in a couple of days and let us know if you still feel like continuing. ;)

The F model carbs have smaller mains than the others; 98 vs 100.  The Pods reduce carb throat vacuum, which is what pulls the fuel through the jets.  Less vacuum, less fuel, lean mixture.

You can either massage the carb internals to get more fuel from them, or go back to the stock air box.

I use the UNI NU-4055 air filter instead of the stock paper, to reduce filter maintenance costs, btw.

Thanks man, i know the main jets are stamped 98 and i dont want to mess around with the different combinations to try and get my top end back.  i plan to ride this bike to the oyster run in Anacortes, WA in sept. to visit some friends.
